LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Purdue men's golf team pieced together one of its best rounds of the young season to surge to a fourth-place tie at the competitive Windon Memorial Classic at the par-72 Knollwood Club.
The Boilermakers entered the day in ninth place out of 16 teams, but fired a two-over par 290 to catapult five teams to finish in a fourth-place tie with Big Ten conference member Ohio State. Purdue finished the three-round tournament at nine-over par 875 (293-292-290).
Today's round of 290 was the third-best team score of the day, behind Northwestern's round of 288 and Ohio State's 287.
Northwestern won the team title with a four-under par 860 (282-290-288), Kent State was second at one-under par (283-286-294) and Michigan was third at eight-over par 872 (292-292-290).
Eight of the nation's top 60 teams (according to Golfweek) were competing at the event as ranked squads Northwestern, Arkansas, Coastal Carolina, Tulsa, Kent State, UC Davis, Iowa and North Texas were all in the 16-team field.
Freshman Austin Eoff turned in another quality performance in just his second collegiate event. One week after finishing in a tie for fourth at the Weibring Intercollegiate, Eoff placed in a tie for 11th with a one-under par 215 after shooting a career-low three-under par 69 in today's third round. Eoff entered the day in a tie for 28th place.
Four of Eoff's six career rounds have been at or under par.
Senior Adam Schenk also turned in a quality performance to tie Eoff in 11th place. After opening with a three-over par 75, Schenk was four-under par in his final two rounds, including a final-round 71 today. Schenk's score of 140 over the final two rounds was the fifth-best score in the field.
Freshman Philippe Schweizer finished in a tie for 31st with a seven-over par 223 following his six-over par 78 today. Enzo Perez was tied for 43rd at 225 (76-74-75) and Justin Cho was tied for 66th at 230 (80-75-75).
Stuart Macdonald competed as an individual and recorded his finest career performance by finishing in a tie for 27th place at five-over par 221 (74-70-77).
Purdue will head to Columbus, Ohio, next Sunday and Monday for the Jack Nicklaus Invitational played at the par 71 Ohio State University Golf Club. Twelve teams, including national powers California (No. 1 in Golfweek national rankings), Kent State, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Mississippi State and East Tennessee State will be in the field.
