Kapitany and Schmidt Bounced from NCAA Doubles Championships

May 23, 2013

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt were bounced from the NCAA Doubles Championships on Thursday. The No. 27 doubles team was knocked off by the No. 7 pair in the nation, Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama.

The doubles championships are played in a best of three set format instead of the eight game pro-set that is played during dual match season. Guarachi and Macfarlane jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set before trading games en route to a 6-3 first set win. In the second set, Kapitany and Schmidt led 5-2 before hanging on for a 7-6 win to force a third and deciding frame. There, it was all Alabama as the duo blanked the Boilermakers, 6-0.

Kapitany and Schmidt were just the fourth doubles team in Purdue history to qualify for the doubles tournament. None of the four has won a match in the tournament.

The loss marks the end of the 2012-13 season for Purdue women's tennis.
