The Boilermakers (17-31) suffered their second 20-2 loss of the season. Feb. 16 in Clearwater, Fla., South Florida scored nine times in the first inning in a blowout of Purdue.
The Boilermakers used a season-high nine pitchers Tuesday, including three in the first inning. Eastern Michigan (25-26) had already scored three times in the top of the first when a potential inning-ending double play ball went through the legs of second baseman Cody Strong. Three more run-scoring hits after the error led to the snowman on the scoreboard.
The Eagles hit line drives all over the field for much of the night. The 24 hits allowed were the most surrendered by Purdue since at least the beginning of the 2008 season. The Boilermakers' pitching staff has surrendered 20-plus hits in a game five times this year.
Kyle Wood connected for his team-leading fifth home run of the season to lead off the fourth inning. Purdue's other run of the night came on an RBI double from Kyle Johnson in the eighth inning. Josh Estill scored from first base after drawing a two-out walk.
Eastern Michigan made a pair of nice catches at the outfield wall as well. Jackson Martin appeared to rob Sean McHugh of a three-run homer with a leaping catch at the right field wall to end the third inning. Left fielder Austin Wilson robbed Estill of an extra-base hit with a running catch on the warning track to begin the bottom of the second.
Brett Andrzejewski and Pat Gannon were the only Purdue pitchers to successfully post zeros on the scoreboard. Andrzejewski gave up a two-out single in the fifth inning that allowed an inherited runner to score, but he finally kept EMU off the scoreboard in the top of the sixth. The senior struck out four of the eight batters he faced.
Gannon erased a leadoff single in the seventh inning thanks to a 4-6-3 double play. Michael Mullen and Steve Maniago teamed up on the twin killing after both players had entered the game as defensive replacements.
Maniago singled and doubled in his two at-bats, finishing the night as the only Boiler with multiple hits.
Purdue returns to action Thursday when it begins its final series of the season, hosting Iowa at Alexander Field. First pitch Thursday is set for 7 p.m.
