TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Both teams scored in four innings but Indiana State put up multiple runs in three of the four frames while also turning four inning-ending double plays in the field, defeating Purdue baseball, 10-5, Tuesday evening.The Boilermakers (11-19) lost for the fifth time in six games since sweeping Penn State in Central Pennsylvania the final weekend of March. Two of those five losses have been against ISU (14-13), which swept the midweek season series.
Indiana State scored four times in the bottom of the second, twice more in the fifth and three times in the sixth. Purdue managed to score only once more after putting four runs over the first three innings. The Boilermakers hit into line drive double plays in the first and sixth innings and 5-4-3 twin killings in the fifth and eighth.
Both teams used six pitchers in the game. Daniel Peterson (1-3), ISU's fifth pitcher of the night, made the play of the game when he speared a line drive missile off the bat of Jake Hansen and doubled off Angelo Cianfrocco at first base. That play came in the top of the sixth after Kyle Johnson and Cianfrocco had recorded back-to-back doubles to lead off the frame and a sacrifice fly from Cody Strong had cut ISU's lead to 7-5.
The Sycamores went on to score three times in the bottom of the frame after loading the bases with no outs, blowing the game open.
Conner Hudnall and Jack Picchiotti joined Johnson and Cianfrocco with a pair of hits apiece for the Boilers. RBI singles came from Picchiotti in the first inning, Cianfrocco in the second, and Johnson in the third.
Purdue struck out a season-low two times in the loss. Peterson was the first ISU pitcher to record a K and it did not come until the top of the seventh.
Eddie DeLaRiva and Tim McElroy were each able to work a scoreless inning of relief after the first man they faced reached base safely. McElroy struck out ISU's 5-6-7 hitters to pitch over a leadoff single in the eighth.
Five straight singles and a sacrifice fly allowed the Sycamores to score four times against Purdue starter Joe Eichmann (0-1) in the bottom of the second. Mike Gaglianese put up a pair of scoreless frames in the third and fourth, but three straight hits plated a pair of runs and chased the sophomore in the bottom of the fourth.
With Sean McHugh sidelined for the first time this season due to a sore hamstring, the Boilermakers used their 24th different batting order in 30 games this season. Picchiotti played third base for the first time at Purdue, seeing action at his fifth position of the season (including designated hitter).
The Boilermakers host Ball State Wednesday at 6 p.m.
