WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 70 Purdue men's tennis team swept a doubleheader on senior day at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers beat Vincennes on the outdoor courts in the morning match before weather forced the teams inside for Purdue's afternoon win.
Purdue (18-11) had a perfect performance from Mateus Silva. The freshman won both of his singles matches over Chris Holcomb and A.J. Steiner, 6-0, 6-0. In doubles, Silva and Arthur Dobradin clinched the point in the afternoon match with a 9-8 (1) victory at No. 2 over Garrett Mandrell and Harsha Manjunath. Dobradin was nearly perfect in singles as he won 6-0, 6-0 in the morning match over Steiner before beating Holcomb 6-1, 6-0.
The Purdue seniors each ended with a pair of singles wins and a doubles victory. Krisztian Krocsko beat Warren Kuhn at No. 1 in the morning match, 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (9) before knocking off Erick Bermudez at No. 2, 6-1, 7-6 (6). Krocsko teamed with Pawel Poziomski to win at No. 1 doubles in the morning match over Kuhn and Bermudez, 8-2. Poziomski placed Krocsko's singles opponents in reverse order. The Gdynia, Poland, native beat Bermudez at No. 2 in the morning, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (12) before knocking off Kuhn at No. 1, 6-2, 6-4.
Krocsko and Poziomski have combined for 77 total singles victories in their career. Both seniors transferred to Purdue after one year stints at different division one programs. Krocsko finished with a pair of academic awards, one ITA, one Big Ten, while Poziomski was named the MAC Newcomer of the Year at Northern Illinois and then earned Purdue's Laith Al-Agba Team Player award last season. Krocsko leads the team in dual match singles wins this season with 20 with victories at Nos. 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6. Poziomski has wins in each of the top four singles spots.
The Boilermakers wrapped up the regular season with Tuesday's two wins. The team will travel to Columbus, Ohio, where it will compete in the Big Ten Tournament. The Boilermakers earned the No. 9 seed and will face the eighth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. ET. A full preview will be posted on PurdueSports.com on Wedneday.
