WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 27 Boilermakers came up short on Senior Day against the No. 16 Northwestern on Friday. The Wildcats beat Purdue, 6-1, on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
Purdue (15-4, 7-3 B1G) was unable to rally back in doubles. Northwestern (14-8, 8-2) took the top singles match as the No. 18 duo of Linda Abu Mushrefova and Nida Hamilton defeated the No. 27 tandem of Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt, 8-1. The remaining matches were back and forth, but the Wildcats clinched the point when Belinda Niu and Kate Turvy held on to beat Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Gisella Pere, 8-6.
Singles didn't get any easier for the Boilermakers.
Northwestern stormed out and took the first five singles matches to make the score 6-0. Abu Mushrefova was first as she handed Bernard-Feigenbaum her second singles loss of the season, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4. Brittany Wowchuk was next as she spoiled Pere's final home match with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6. Alicia Barnett clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kapitany at No. 5.
The No. 49 player in the country was next to pick up a point for Northwestern. Turvy used an underhand serve to shift the pace in her favor as she beat Lynda Xepoleas at No. 2, 6-4, 6-2. Veronica Corning, the No. 122 singles player in the country, made the score 6-0 with a win at No. 1. She rallied to beat Schmidt, 6-7 (4), 6-0, 1-0 (5).
The Boilermakers finally got on the board with a win at No. 3. Daniela Vidal fought back to beat Niu, 2-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (4).
Purdue has fallen to the Wildcats twice this season.
The Boilermakers wrap up the regular season on Sunday with a trip to Illinois. The match is scheduled to begin at noon ET.
