MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 58 Purdue men's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat at the hands of the No. 40 Minnesota Golden Gophers on Friday. The Boilermakers dropped the doubles point and four singles matches.
Purdue (16-9, 3-6 B1G) fell to 0-8 when it loses the doubles point. Rok Bonin and Juan Pablo Ramirez first defeated Diego Acosta and Aaron Dujovne at No. 2, 8-2. The Gophers clinched the point with an 8-5 win at No. 1 as Mathieu Froment and Jack Hamburg knocked off Krisztian Krocsko and Szymon Tatarczyk.
Minnesota (11-9, 7-2) continued its success in singles. The No. 45 singles player in the country, Bonin, was first as he knocked off Mark Kovacs, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1. Next was Ruben Weber as he pushed the Gopher lead to 3-0 by knocking off Mateus Silva, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6. The Boilermakers got on the board with a win at No. 5. Krocsko defeated Ramirez, 6-4, 6-3.
The Gophers clinched the point with a win at No. 2. The No. 81 player in the country, Leandro Toledo, held on to beat Tatarczyk, 7-6 (1), 6-4. The Boilermakers picked up their second singles win with a victory at No. 3. Acosta defeated Hamburg, 6-2, 3-6, 2-1 ret. Minnesota wrapped up the match as Froment beat Dujovne at No. 4, 6-3, 7-6 (4).
The Boilermakers wrap up Big Ten regular season play this weekend with a trip to Northwestern before hosting Illinois.
