INDIANAPOLIS -- Diver Layne Rogers and the four members of the 200 freestyle relay team earned Honorable Mention All-America recognition by qualifying for consolation finals Thurdsday, highlighting the opening day of action at the NCAA Championships for Purdue men's swimming and diving.Rogers finished as the runner-up in the consolation final of 1-meter diving with a score of 365.10, placing 10th nationally in an event that featured 34 divers when competition began. He finished about 4 ½ points behind consolation final winner Riley McCormick of Arizona State and improved on his preliminary round scored by 22 ½ points.
Danny Tucker, Chuck Destro, Benjamin Ziolkowski and Matt Friede teamed up to take third in the consolation final of the 200 free relay, placing 11th nationally with a time of 1:18.26. It marked the second year in a row Purdue's 200 free relay team earned Honorable Mention All-America distinction by advancing to the consolation final. The foursome was eighth in the consolation final a year ago. Tucker, Ziolkowski and Friede have been part of both seasons' relay quartets.
Meanwhile, Rogers was able to score in his debut event as a freshman competing at the national championship meet. He earned seven team points for Purdue in the event.
The 200 free relay team improved on its preliminary round time by .13 tenths of a second. Friede closed the race with a team-best 50 free split of 19.24. The relay foursome earned the Boilers 12 team points.
Purdue finished the opening day of competition at the NCAA Championships with 19 points, good for 16th place among the 29 scoring teams.
Jamie Bissett, Lyam Dias and Tucker also competed individually Thursday. Bissett placed 24th in the prelims of 1-meter diving. Dias was 61st in the prelims of the 200 IM and Tucker finished 20th in the prelims of the 50 free.
The Purdue coaches opted to scratch the 400 medley relay team from the morning prelims. Head coach Dan Ross said the 200 medley relay was still scheduled to compete Friday morning. The Purdue quartet for that event is expected to feature Stephen Seliskar, Dias, Destro and Tucker, although teams have the option of subbing out relay members for any team swimmers that are competing at NCAAs this week.
The 100 breaststroke (Dias) and 3-meter diving (Bissett and Rogers) along with the 200 medley relay represent the events on Purdue's schedule for Friday. Prelims begin at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m.
