Boilermakers Wrap Up Non-Conference Slate with Win at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Purdue men's tennis team wrapped up a perfect spring break trip on Saturday with a victory over Santa Clara. The Boilermakers knocked off the Broncos, 4-3, in their final non-conference match of the season.

Doubles proved to foretell the match outcome for the 16th-straight match this season for Purdue (13-3). The Boilermakers took the doubles point with strong performances at No. 2 and No. 3. Mark Kovacs and Pawel Poziomski were first to finish as the No. 3 doubles team dominated Logan Chun and Tomasz Soltyak. The Boilermaker pair won, 8-2. Szymon Tatarczyk and Krisztian Krocsko clinched the point with a win at No. 2. The duo knocked off Ashot Khacharyan and Ilya Osintsev, 8-6. Purdue is now 13-0 when it wins the doubles point this season.

Mateus Silva gave Purdue a 2-0 lead with a perfect performance at No. 6. The freshman blanked Chun, 6-0, 6-0. Kovacs was next as he brought the Boilermakers within a point of victory with a win at No. 2. The junior defeated Osintsev, 7-6, 6-3. Krocsko clinched the win as he was victorious at No. 5. The senior topped Soltyka in straight-sets, 6-3, 7-6.

Santa Clara (11-6) won the final three singles matches of the day, two in three sets. Khacharyan topped Poziomski at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6. Next, Tom Pham rallied to defeat Aaron Dujovne, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (9). The No. 68 player in the country also had to rally to win at No. 1. John Lamble defeated Tatarczyk, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.

The Boilermakers open conference play next weekend with trips to Ohio State and Penn State. Purdue will take on the Buckeyes on Friday and the Nittany Lions on Sunday.
