STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Quality starts from pitchers Brad Schreiber and Jordan Minch as well as a five-run inning in the afternoon win against Samford highlighted Purdue baseball's weekend-opening split at the Diamond Classic at Dudy Noble Field Friday.The Boilermakers (3-3) pounded out 16 hits in their 9-4 win against Samford (4-2), scoring eight of their nine runs from the seventh through ninth innings. Purdue was tied with No. 5 Mississippi State (6-0) until the eighth in a game that featured an 80-minute rain delay. The MSU Bulldogs plated the go-ahead run in the eighth inning to defeat the Boilers, 3-2.
Brandon Krieg had four hits in the Samford win and finished the day 6-for-10. Conner Hudnall also had four hits in the afternoon game en route to a 5-for-9 day. Kyle Wood delivered a game-tying, two-out double in the eighth inning of the MSU game, punctuating a day in which he reached base safely in five of his seven plate appearances.
Minch worked six innings of one-run ball against Mississippi State, keeping the home team off the scoreboard until giving up a leadoff home run in the sixth inning. He walked three and struck out five, recording a number of key outs to end innings and leave runners on base.
Schreiber also limited the opposition to only four hits over six innings. He was charged with three runs, two scoring after he gave way to Eddie De LaRiva out of the Purdue bullpen with the bases loaded and no outs in the seventh inning.
De LaRiva (2-1) minimized the damage in the seventh inning, keeping Purdue within a run at 3-2 after inducing a 6-4-3 double play. The freshman closed out the win with three innings of one-run relief.
After the start of the Purdue-MSU game was delayed about half an hour due to rain, another line of showers rolled through Starkville with two men aboard, two outs and the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of seventh inning. The Bulldogs were able to score twice after the game resumed without recording a hit.
Purdue is scheduled to play Mississippi State again Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. The first game of the day Saturday will feature MSU and Samford at 3:30 p.m. ET.

The game was a pitcher's duel until the Boilers blew it open in the late innings. Schreiber retired the first nine men he faced in order and Samford starter Eric Wright kept Purdue off the scoreboard until he balked in a run in the top of the fifth.
Three consecutive singles from Hudnall, Wood and Jack Amaro ignited the Boilers' five-run rally in the top of the eighth. Amaro was looking to sacrifice his teammates into scoring position when he beat out the bunt to load the bases. Hudnall scored the tying run on a wild pitch and Hansen plated Wood as the tying run with a sacrifice fly that the Samford left fielder made a sliding catch on in foul territory. Three consecutive two-out RBI singles from Krieg, Stephen Talbott and Sean McHugh followed. After the ninth batter of the inning was retired to finally end the frame, Purdue had turned a one-run deficit into a four-run lead.
The Boilermakers recorded another set of three consecutive hits to begin the ninth inning, tacking on two more insurance runs thanks to a sacrifice fly from Angelo Cianfrocco and another wild pitch. The 5-6-7 trio of Hudnall, Wood and Amaro ignited both rallies.
Purdue carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning when a leadoff single, hit batter and walk loaded the bases and brought Schreiber's day to an end. De LaRiva gave up a game-tying RBI single to the first batter he faced, but the freshman regrouped and got the double play ball to shortstop. The go-ahead run scored on the 6-4-3 twin killing but De LaRiva retired the next hitter to end the inning.
Back-to-back hits from Hansen and Krieg helped Purdue score a single run in the fifth and seventh innings. Krieg's double in the top of the seventh moved Hansen to third base with one out in the seventh. With the game tied 1-1, Samford brought the infield in and threw home on Talbott's ground ball to shortstop. The throw beat Hansen to the plate but the senior dodged the catcher's tag and touched the plate before the catcher could regroup.

Purdue did not record a 1-2-3 inning in the tightly played contest. Minch fanned the final batter of the inning in the first, third and fifth innings. He induced a 4-3 double play to erase a leadoff single in the first and retired MSU's 5-6-7 hitters in order after surrendering the leadoff home run to Hunter Renfroe in the in the sixth inning.
Purdue reliever Mike Lutz retired the first two batters of the seventh inning before issuing a walk and giving up an infield single. The rain delay began moments later and when play resumed, back-to-back hit batters by Lutz forced in the go-ahead run. The freshman hit Mitch Slauter with the first pitch following the delay and also plunked Renfro after he was ahead in the count 1-2. Tim McElroy retired the first man he faced on a fly ball to left field to end the inning and keep it a one-run game.
Mississippi State retired the first two batters of the eighth inning. Krieg kept the frame alive with a single through the left side and scored from first base when Kyle Wood won a lefty-lefty matchup with a double into the right field corner.
McElroy issued a leadoff walk to the No. 6 hitter in the MSU lineup and then gave way to Patrick Kenney out of the bullpen. Pinch runner Derrick Armstrong stole second base and took third when the throw caromed off his body and into left field. Kenney had a lengthy battled with MSU pinch hitter Jacob Robson after the count went 3-0, but a line drive to left field led to a sacrifice fly that plated what proved to be the game-winning run.
Mississippi State closer Jonathan Holder (1-0) struck out three of the Boilers he faced to finish off the win, earning the victory in relief. The right-hander has fanned 11 of the 13 batters to come to the plate against him this season.
