COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Boilermaker softball avenged one of its Friday losses, shutting out Southeastern Louisiana 6-0 Saturday morning. Purdue rapped out 10 hits in the game, while giving up just two to the Lady Lions.
Freshman Lilly Fecho (3-3) struck out three in five and a third innings of work en route to the win, while sophomore Alex Whittemore finished off the game, issuing three more Ks in the final inning and two thirds. Kati Morse (2-1) was saddled with the loss for SELU.
Eight different players posted hits for Purdue in the win, including two apiece by junior Lindsey Rains and senior Ashley Courtney. Rains drove in four of the team's six runs.
Southeastern Louisiana threatened first, putting a runner on second after a leadoff single and a sacrifice in the bottom of the first, but could not score.
The Boilermakers broke onto the scoreboard in the second, combining a pair of hits by junior Danielle Fletcher and Courtney. Fletcher poked a leadoff double into center field and advanced to third on a sacrifice. Courtney brought her home with a two-out single up the middle.
The Lady Lions put two on to no avail in the second, wasting a single and a hit batsman.
Purdue tacked on two runs on five hits in the fifth. Freshman CJ Parsons sent a single up the left field line to start the inning. Courtney followed with a single to second base. Junior Kristin Morgan plated pinch runner Gabi Brown with a single to shallow center. Courtney was out trying to advance to third on the play. Freshman Sydney Pencek, who was running for Morgan, swiped second, setting up an RBI single to center by Rains. The Boilermakers loaded the bases as sophomore Ashley Burkhardt singled and junior Andie Varsho walked, but could not add to the 3-0 lead.
The Boilermakers made it 6-0 with three runs on a pair of hits in the sixth. Senior Erika Petruzzi started the inning with a pinch hit single up the middle. She stole second with two outs, before being joined by Morgan and sophomore Alyssa Koorsen, who walked. Rains cleared the bags with a double off the right field wall.
Whittemore entered the game with one out in the sixth and promptly issued a strikeout and flyout.
Varsho singled and stole second and third in the seventh, but was left stranded by a fly out.
The Lady Lions drew a one-out walk in the seventh, but a fielder's choice and a strikeout sealed the Boilermaker win.
Purdue (6-7) looks to avenge Friday night's loss to No. 10 Texas A&M in a 4 p.m. ET contest.
