COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Boilermaker softball team had plenty of base runners but could not string together timely hits in a 3-1 loss to Southeastern Louisiana Friday morning. Purdue looks to rebound against No. 10 Texas A&M in a 6:15 p.m. ET game.
The Boilermakers scored a run on four hits and an error, while allowing the Lady Lions three runs on six hits and two errors. Sophomore Ashley Burkhardt drove in Purdue's lone run with an RBI double in the third inning.
Kenna Terry struck out six batters in the winning effort for SELU. Sophomore Lexy Moore issued two strikeouts in five innings of work in the loss. Senior Erika Petruzzi finished off the game for the Boilermakers, sitting down six straight batters, including a strikeout.
The Boilermakers put two runners in scoring position in the first, but could not score. Burkhardt reached on an error and stole second, but was caught stealing third. Junior Andie Varsho sent a triple into the left field corner, but was left stranded.
Purdue got on the board in the third inning as Burkhardt hit a double to the left center gap to drive in junior Lindsey Rains, who drew a one-out walk. A pair of fly balls left Burkhardt stranded.
The Boilers had runners at the corners in the fourth, but could not push a run across. Senior Maia Monchek singled, senior Ashley Courtney was hit by a pitch and a fielder's choice play put freshman CJ Parsons aboard. A strikeout ended the stanza.
Southeastern Louisiana took a 3-1 lead on a three-run shot to left by Kelsey Nichols in fifth. The two-out long ball followed a hit, a walk and a fielder's choice play at third. Varsho made a leaping grab in right field to end the inning.
Rains was hit by a pitch to give the Boilermakers a base runner in the fifth, but was later caught stealing.
Purdue trailed 3-1 heading into the seventh inning. Parsons poked a one-out single over the third baseman. A fielder's choice play at second base and a strikeout kept the Boilermakers from putting together a late rally.
The Boilermakers (5-6) return to action at 6:15 p.m. ET when they take on No. 10 Texas A&M to wrap Day 1 action at the Texas A&M Invitational.
