WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 27 Purdue women's tennis team wrapped up the Purdue Invitational on Monday with another victory in the preseason tournament. The Boilermakers defeated the University of Illinois-Chicago in both doubles matches and in the four singles matches.
The weekend started with doubles play on Saturday. The Boilers defeated UIC and DePaul on all of the courts. On Sunday, Purdue had singles competition against UIC and DePaul. Purdue came out on top on each of the six singles courts against the Flames and on four of the six against the Blue Demons. Monday's format was scheduled to be four doubles matches and six singles matches against UIC, but a number of Boilermaker women were held out due to illness, so just two doubles and four singles matches were played.
In doubles, Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt dominated the No. 1 match. The duo defeated Natalia Kuvakina and Kathryn Sharples, 8-2. Daniela Vidal and Imogen played together for the first time at No. 2. The duo struggled in the beginning, but rallied to win the final three games to tie the score at seven and force a tiebreak. There, the Purdue duo dominated, 7-2, to win.
In singles, Golder was bumped up to No. 4 and face Hahn in the preseason tournament competition. The Purdue senior had a quick contest as she won 6-2, 6-1. Schmidt, the No. 108 singles player in the country, was bumped up to No. 1 in the Boilermaker lineup. She, too, had little trouble as she defeated Sharples, 6-2, 6-2.
Vidal played at No. 3 and faced Jana Knoppe. The Purdue sophomore was perfect in the first set, winning 6-0. In the second, though, she dropped the first three games before regaining her strong forehand and crafty short chips to win six of the last seven games and clinch her match, 6-4. Kapitany wrapped up the day with a 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 2 over Palacios.
The Boilermakers begin the dual match season on Friday with a contest against Washington State in Evanston, Ill. The Cougars are ranked No. 32 in the latest poll, but a new poll will be released on Tuesday. If the Boilermakers win that match, they will face the winner of Northwestern and Arkansas.
