DALLAS -- A new season-best time in a medley relay event for the second day in a row highlighted the final night of action for Purdue men's swimming and diving at the six-team Classic @ SMU Saturday evening. The Boilermakers finished in fifth place among the fast six-team field, holding off the host SMU team by three points. Fifth-ranked USC rallied to win meet, finishing with 330 points. The Trojans entered the night trailing No. 1 Michigan by four points but went on to win by three. The 18th and final event, the 200 freestyle relay, decided the team title. No. 7 Florida placed third and No. 16 Louisville fourth.
"This was the fastest in-season meet I have ever been a part of," Purdue head coach Dan Ross said. "USC, Michigan and Florida battled to the end and USC squeaked out the win. We beat SMU after being down a point after Friday. I'm proud of our guys and the amount of prep we put into this meet. Now it's back to West Lafayette and back to work. With a weekend coming up with no competition, we need to get some things accomplished before the Wisconsin, Minnesota and Indiana meets leading up to the ultimate goal of our Big Ten performances."
Brian Kiel, Lyam Dias, Chuck Destro and Danny Tucker teamed up to finish the 200 medley relay with a Purdue season-best time of 1:29.84. Friday, the same foursome also posted the team's top mark of the year in the 400 medley relay. Destro and Tucker have both been part of the Boilers' top times in all five relay events this season.
Jan Karel Petric and Alec LaMothe teamed up to make the 500 freestyle Purdue's top-scoring individual event of the night Saturday. Both swimmers placed fourth in their finals. LaMothe's time of 4:29.44 was only .15 hundredths of a second behind his season-best time from the Purdue Invitational. The senior did record a personal season-best time in the 200 fly.
Matt Friede (100 free) and Danny Conway (200 breast) also managed to post notable personal season-best times Saturday. The 200 freestyle relay team of Tucker, Destro, Kiel and Friede accounted for Purdue's third-fastest time of the year in the event.
USC's Vladimir Morozov won the A final of the 100 freestyle Saturday with a meet-record time of 41.70, touching first in the event by more than two seconds. He also won the 50 free and 100 breaststroke for the Trojans this weekend.
The Boilermakers will be idle from competition next weekend, instead rooting on the Purdue women's team for the Big Ten Network live television meet at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center Saturday at noon against rival Indiana. The men will send a full travel roster to Madison, Wis., the weekend of Feb. 1-2 for the annual Big Ten triple duals against Minnesota and Wisconsin.
