WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 27 Purdue women's tennis team dominated a pair of doubles matches on Saturday. The Boilermakers swept No. 65 DePaul and the University of Illinois-Chicago in the first day of the Purdue Invitational by winning all six doubles matches.
Purdue started Saturday afternoon with three doubles matches against the Flames as well as one singles exhibition match. The pair of Imogen Golder and Gisella Pere finished its match in less than 30 minutes as the seniors dominated Jana Knoppe and Keti Mebuke at No. 3, 8-0. Krisztina Kapitany and Mara Schmidt were the top Purdue pair and played to a controlled victory. The duo defeated Haley Craig and Palacios, whose full name was not available on the official UIC athletics webpage, 8-5. Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela completed the sweep with a dominant win at No. 2. The sophomores took down Natalia Kuvakina and Kathryn Sharples, 8-4.
Claudia Escribens played in a singles exhibition match against Hahn, whose full name was also not listed. Escribens cruised to an 8-1 win.
In its second match of the day, Purdue was even more dominant despite facing a ranked foe. Pere and Golder again put a thrashing on their opponent, this time by the tune of an 8-2 win over Kelsey Lawson and Jarret Fisher at No. 3. Xepoleas and Vidal were the second team done and won by the same margin as the senior pair. The sophomores defeated Matea Cutura and Zaini Sufi at No. 2. Kapitany and Schmidt completed the sweep with a thrashing of Patricia Fargas and Ana Vladutu at No. 1. The Boilermaker pair won, 8-3.
Purdue will face UIC in six singles matches beginning at 9 a.m. on Sunday. The Boilermakers will then face DePaul at noon also in singles play. UIC and DePaul will play against each other at 3 p.m. All action will take place on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
