WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The men's tennis team picked up a couple more wins on Saturday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers knocked off DePaul and IPFW on the Basham Courts.
Purdue (5-0) started strong against the Blue Demons in the first match of the day. Despite having lost the previous three matchups between the schools, the Boilermakers took control from the opening serve. Pawel Poziomski and Mark Kovacs got the team rolling with a doubles win at No. 3. The duo knocked off Adam Reinhart and Paul John, 8-5. Diego Acosta and Aaron Dujovne clinched the point with a spirited win at No. 1. The team put together stretches of perfectly place drop shots backed up by overpowering forehands to beat Mathias Hambach and Filip Dzanko, 8-4.
In singles play, Kovacs made quick work of Hambach at No. 2. The Purdue junior took the first set, 6-1, before cruising to a 6-2 second set win to give the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead. Krisztian Krocsko brought the team within one point of victory after dominating at No. 6. The Purdue senior was perfect in the first set over John, winning 6-0, before hanging on for a 6-4 win in set No. 2.
The Boilermakers clinched the win over DePaul (1-1) with an almost perfect performance from Dujovne at No. 5. The junior won 6-0, 6-1 in a match that slowed by point and game penalties, as well as coach meetings, to his opponent, Reinhart. Purdue ended up winning the dual match, 4-3.
In the evening match, Purdue faced IPFW. The Boilermakers had only played the Mastodons once before in history, a 4-0 win in 2012. The Old Gold and Black changed up the lineup a bit for the evening match and put a freshman pair at No. 3 doubles. Arthur Dobradin and Mateus Silva were the first to finish as they defeated Gerard Guell and Andres Cobos, 8-2. Krocsko and Szymon Tatarczyk clinched the doubles point with an 8-2 win at No. 2. The Purdue duo beat Connor Andres and Martin Maudi.
IPFW (0-1) struggled to get things going in singles as well. The No. 118 singles player in the country, Acosta, was first to finish. The sophomore picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Andres. Tatarczyk made the score 3-0 with a dominant win of his own at No. 1. The junior defeated Daniel Kang, 6-1, 6-1.
Krocsko clinched the team win with a win at No. 4. The Hungarian won over Guell, 6-3, 6-4. Poziomski made the score 5-0 with a win at No. 3. The senior beat Cobos 6-1, 6-4. Silva also picked up a singles win on the day. The freshman defeated Joao Freitas, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 5. Dobradin completed the shutout for the Boilermakers with a come-from-behind win at No. 6. The freshman, after dropping the first set, defeated Maudi 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-2)
The Boilermakers hit the road next weekend for the first time in the spring season. The team will travel to the east coast to play at Dartmouth on Saturday and at Brown on Sunday.
