DALLAS -- Nate Cox won the 1-meter diving competition and the Boilermakers posted season-best times in two events, highlighting the opening night of competition at the two-day Classic @ SMU Friday evening.The Boilermakers were in fifth place among the loaded six-team field with 116 points. Purdue was nine points behind fourth-place (No. 16) Louisville and one point ahead of sixth-place SMU. No. 1 Michigan held the lead with 166 points, four points in front of second-place (No. 5) USC.
Cox continued his strong start to the spring semester competition schedule with the first event victory of his college career, winning a tightly-contested event that featured six points separating the first and third-place finishers.
The 400 medley relay foursome of Brian Kiel, Lyam Dias, Chuck Destro and Danny Tucker teamed up to record a new Purdue season-best time of 3:15.75. Dias also posted a new team-best showing in the 100 breaststroke (55.68).
Tucker and Destro teamed up to make the 50 freestyle Purdue's top scoring individual event of the night. Both swimmers placed third in their finals. Tucker's time of 20.03 was just one one-hundredth of a second behind his team season-best time from the Purdue Invitational.
Remarkably, Alec LaMothe and Matt Friede each finished the 200 freestyle with the same time (1:40.04) while completing in different finals. They each posted a new personal season-best time in the process. Danny Conway also had a pair of personal season-best marks in the 100 breast and 400 IM.
The Classic @ SMU concludes Saturday at 8:30 p.m. Nine events - seven individual and two relays - will be contested Saturday.
