EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Brian Kiel, Danny Tucker and the 400 free relay team set new facility records at McCaffree Pool, leading Purdue men's swimming and diving to a 190-102 dual meet victory Friday evening at Michigan State.The Boilermakers improved to 4-1 in dual meet action this season. Purdue won 13 of the 16 events. Diver Alec Back, Kiel and Tucker each posted multiple individual victories. Chuck Destro and Tucker were each part of both relay winners.
"Kudos to Danny Tucker and Brian Kiel and the 400 free relay for setting pool records tonight. I told them to enjoy it tonight but it means nothing if we don't get better tomorrow," Purdue head coach Dan Ross said. "It was a very good total team effort tonight. The divers, sprinters, distance and `strokers all came through. Our goal is to always improve in January and February from our best fall showing, which this year was the Purdue Invite. I think we will be close as we move later into January without sacrificing training. Now it's on to [the University of] Michigan and we'll race the best we can against maybe the best team in the country."
Tucker recorded a Purdue season-best time while winning the 100 free by more than two seconds with a pool-record time of 44.21. He posted the Boilers' first NCAA provisional-qualifying time of the season in the event and now owns B cuts in the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints this year. He also out-touched Benjamin Ziolkowski to win the 50 free Friday.
Kiel swept the backstroke events, posting a new pool record in the 200 (1:46.31) while winning the event by more than five seconds. He also won the 200 IM while accounting for the second-fastest time of the year for Purdue. Kiel also swam the breaststroke leg on the victorious 200 medley relay, teaming up with Stephen Seliskar, Destro and Tucker.
Tucker (11) and Kiel (10) continue to rank one-two on the team in individual victories this season.
Meanwhile, Back won his first two diving events of the season with a sweep of the 1- and 3-meter springboard events. Nate Cox also placed among the top three in both competitions and posted an NCAA Zone-qualifying score from the 3-meter board. All five Purdue divers have now qualified for Zones from the 3-meter.
Manuel Gutierrez (200), Alec LaMothe (500) and Jan Karel Petric (1000) teamed up with Tucker to give the Boilers a sweep of the freestyle events. LaMothe also finished second to Petric in the 1000. Gutierrez out-touched Jes Stephens by half of a second as Purdue also finished one-two in the 200. Matt Friede placed second to Tucker in the 100 while also anchoring the 400 free relay.
Destro, Ziolkowski, Tucker and Friede's 400 free relay winning time of 2:59.71 was a new pool-record time and the fastest of the season for the Boilermakers.
Eduard Galdeano rounded out the Purdue winners with a victory in the 200 butterfly.
Saturday's dual meet with No. 1-ranked Michigan is slated to begin at 2 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
