WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team capped off a perfect day on the courts on Saturday as the Boilermakers beat IUPUI 7-0 in the final match to go 3-0 on the day, all in shutout fashion.
"The first day went great," head coach Pawel Gajdzik said. "It was exciting and I was proud of the guys that competed. We got a lot of things done that we addressed in the locker room between the matches. We could see the team progress throughout the day."
Pawel Poziomski clinched Purdue's victory over the Jaguars with a 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 3. Poziomski, now 2-0 on the season, defeated Thomas Gans in his first completed match at No. 3.
Purdue (3-0) started doubles much better than it had in its first two matches. The Boilermakers took an early lead for the doubles point after Mark Kovacs and Poziomski won their third match of the day. The No. 3 duo, which finished first in all three matches, knocked off Gans and Joel Modesitt, 8-5. Diego Acosta and Aaron Dujovne clinched the point with a win at No. 1. The pair, which was ranked in the top 15 a year ago, defeated Patrick O'Neill and Jason Jaruvang, 8-4. Krisztian Krocsko and Szymon Tatarczyk led at No. 2, 7-4, before the match was left unfinished.
IUPUI (0-2) had a tough time regrouping in singles. Tatarczyk gave the Boilermakers a 2-0 lead with a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. The Purdue senior is now 2-0 with a win at No. 1 and No. 2. Mateus Silva picked up his first career win with a victory at No. 6. Silva defeated Jacob Bradley, 6-2, 6-0, to bring the Boilermakers within a point of the victory.
After Poziomski clinched the match, Arthur Dobradin picked up his first career victory. The freshman from Chicago controlled his match at No. 5 against Jacob Hedderig and won, 6-2, 6-3.
"It was great to see the two freshmen get their first wins as Boilermakers in the dual match season," said Gajdzik. "It's very exciting. Arthur did an awesome job taking care of his court and Mateus only lost two games. That gives us a lot of hope for the future. Still a lot of work and learning to do for these guys, but they give us something to be excited about for the future."
Krocsko gave Purdue a 6-0 lead with a win at No. 4. The senior, now 3-0 on the season with wins at No. 6, No. 5, and No. 4, beat O'Neill, 6-3, 6-4. Kovacs clinched the shutout with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 1. Kovacs, now 2-0, beat Jaruvang.
The Boilermakers will have a week to rest and get prepared for DePaul and IPFW. Purdue will play the two schools next Saturday, Jan. 19, at noon and 6 p.m., respectively.
