WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team started Saturday two for two as the Boilermakers shut out another opponent. Purdue knocked off Butler, 4-0, in its second match of the day and has one more remaining tonight at 7 p.m. ET.
Purdue (2-0) clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-3 victory by Aaron Dujovne at No. 4 singles. The junior got off to a fast start and was dominant against Brandon Woods. Dujovne is now 2-0 on the season.
Butler (0-1) put up an incredible fight in doubles. The Bulldogs led all three matches for the majority of the sets. However, the Boilermakers overcame their slow starts. Mark Kovacs and Pawel Poziomski were first to pick up a win. Similar to their morning match, Poziomski and Kovacs were behind early. Then, the duo put together a string of four straight games to take a 6-5 lead. From there, the Purdue pair hung on to win, 8-6, over Sam O'Neill and Woods. Diego Acosta and Dujovne secured the point with a win at No. 1. The duo, after dropping its morning match, again had to play from behind. The South American pair had just enough, though, and came out on top, 8-6 over Billy Weldon and Austin Woldmoe.
The No. 118 player in the country Acosta played up at No. 2 singles after the Boilermakers decided to rest Kovacs for the evening match. That didn't slow the sophomore down a bit as his was the first match done. Acosta won 6-1, 6-2 over Pulok Bhattacharya to give Purdue a 2-0 lead. Krisztian Krocsko brought the team within a point of victory with a straight set win of his own. Krocsko improved to 2-0 on the season with a win over O'Neill at No. 5, 6-3, 6-1.
After Dujovne clinched the match, the remaining three singles courts suspended play in order to allow Toledo and IUPUI to finish their singles match before the Boilermakers face IUPUI at 7 p.m. The Boilermakers led all three matches by a set and Szymon Tatarczyk was within two games of a win at No. 1. Mateus Silva saw his first action of the season debuting at No. 6. The freshman battled back and forth with Weldon at No. 6 and took the first set 7-5 before stopping the match.
The Boilermakers have now won 27 straight over the instate Bulldogs. Purdue also improves to 39-2 all-time in the series.
Purdue has one more match in the opening day tripleheader. The Boilermakers and Jaguars will begin at 7 p.m. ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center. Live results, live video, and an interactive blog will be available for the match at PurdueSports.com.
