CHAMPAIGN, Ill./MEMPHIS - The Purdue women's tennis team wrapped up action at the Midwest Blast and the Memphis Invitational on Sunday. The women capped off outstanding weekends at both tournaments.
At the Midwest Blast, Purdue had a hidden dual singles match against Illinois. Daniela Vidal slid up to the No. 1 spot for Purdue for the first time. The sophomore took advantage of her opportunity and knocked off Julia Jamieson, 6-2, 6-1. Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum played her first match at No. 2 and had little trouble. The freshman from New York cruised past Misia Kedzierski, 6-3, 6-1.
Breanne Smutko of Illinois picked up a win at No. 3 over Gisella Pere. Smutko defeated Pere, 6-4, 6-3. Imogen Golder was at No. 4 for the Boilermakers. Golder faced Audrey O'Connor and was dominant, winning 6-2, 6-0.
Claudia Escribens played an additional match against a Georgia Tech student-athlete. Escribens was defeated by Natasha Prokhnevska, 6-2, 6-3. Bernard-Feigenbaum and Pere played an additional doubles match against an Illinois pair. The Boilermaker duo was victorious over Smutko and O'Connor, 8-5.
The Boilermakers were victorious in each match of the hidden dual over the weekend. The team was 7-0 in doubles and 11-4 in singles.
At the Memphis Invite, Mara Schmidt competed for the White Draw championship. Schmidt faced Tiffany Welcher of Memphis in the title match. There, Schmidt was dominated the first set, 6-1. However, from there, Welcher rallied and won the next two sets, 6-3, 6-2, to win the White Draw. Schmidt finished runner-up.
In the Gray Draw, Krisztina Kapitany competed in the third place match against Whitney Wofford of Oklahoma. Kapitany was perfect in the first set, winning 6-0. The second was a bit more of a challenge, but the Purdue freshman was able to hang on for a 7-5 win to take third place in the draw.
Schmidt and Kapitany also had a number of doubles matches. The duo lost to Courtney Colton and Lauren Mira of Vanderbilt on Saturday night. Sunday, the duo lost to Whitney Ritchie and Hermon Brhane of Oklahoma, 8-5.
The Midwest Blast and Memphis Invite were the final tournaments scheduled for the fall season. The Purdue women will resume action in January at the Purdue Invitational.
