CHAMPAIGN, Ill./MEMPHIS - The Purdue women's tennis team had another outstanding day at the Midwest Blast and the Memphis Invitational on Saturday. The Boilermakers went 7-3 combined in the two tournaments.
At the Midwest Blast, the Boilermakers started the morning with a doubles match against Wake Forest. Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal held down the No. 1 spot and dominated in their match. The sophomores took down Karen Forman and Xue Zhang, 8-1. Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Imogen Golder were impressive at No. 2 as the freshman-senior combination took down Brigita Bercyte and Andrea Retolaza Andrade, 8-1. The Boilermakers finished up their doubles at the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record.
In the afternoon, Purdue faced Georgia Tech in singles. Xepoleas had the most impressive win on the day. The No. 121 ranked singles player in the country was faced with No. 94 Elizabeth Kilborn. Xepoleas was in control the entire match and won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Vidal also had an impressive singles victory. The sophomore defeated Kendal Woodard in three sets, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1. Bernard-Feigenbaum continued her incredible fall season with another singles win. Playing at No. 3, the Boilermaker rookie defeated Megan Kurey, 7-5, 6-3.
Golder was slotted at No. 4 for Purdue and faced Natasha Prokhnevska. Golder needed a full three sets, but held on to win, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. Gisella Pere played at No. 5, but was defeated by Jasmine Minor, 6-4, 7-6. Claudia Escribens played an extra match against Breanne Smutko of Illinois, but also came up short, 7-5, 6-4. The Boilermakers wrap up the Midwest Blast with singles at noon ET against Illinois.
In Tennessee, Mara Schmidt continues to make her way through the singles White Draw. Schmidt advanced to the finals with a straight sets win over Alyssa Hibberd of Memphis, 7-5, 6-1. The Boilermaker junior is scheduled to face Tiffany Welcher of Memphis at 11 a.m. ET. Welcher advanced to the quarterfinals at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals two weeks ago hosted by Purdue.
Krisztina Kapitany also had a semifinal singles match on Saturday, though hers was in the Gray Draw. Kapitany took the first set over Saana Saarteinen of Tulsa, 6-3. However, Saarteinen was too much for the Purdue freshman and took the final two sets, 6-0, 6-1. Kapitany will play in the third place match against Whitney Wofford of Oklahoma at 9:30 a.m. ET on Sunday.
The Boilermaker duo of Schmidt and Kapitany had a late doubles match on Friday night against Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wegner of Memphis and lost, 8-2. Doubles results from Saturday will not be available until Sunday.
