WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 22 Boilermaker volleyball accomplished a lot with a 3-0 sweep of instate rival Indiana Wednesday night. With the 25-21, 25-20, 25-23 win, Purdue secured the Monon Spike traveling trophy, won its 20th match of the season, ensured a winning Big Ten campaign and avenged an earlier season loss to the Hoosiers.
Senior Ariel Turner had an all-around outstanding effort for the Boilermakers, pacing the team with 18 kills, 14 digs and also adding six blocks. Freshman Annie Drews also had a strong offensive showing with 11 kills and just one error for a match-leading .476 hitting effort.
Defensively, redshirt junior Carly Cramer joined Turner in double digits with 11, while redshirt junior setter Rachel Davis added nine and freshman Amanda Neill chipped in eight saves. Neill also served up three of Purdue's five aces in the match. Sophomore Kiki Jones led the team at the net with eight stuffs, including two solo efforts.
Purdue outhit the Hoosiers .299 to .210 and outblocked IU 14-7.
Purdue hit .324 to IU's .162 in the set and put up five stuffs to the Hoosiers' one in a 25-21 Set 1 victory. The Boilermakers scored four of the first five points in the match and went on to a 9-3 lead, forcing an Indiana timeout. Purdue piled up three blocks, including a solo stuff by Turner in the opening sequence. The Hoosiers battled back to cut the margin to two at 12-10 and eventually tied the score at 15 and 16 before the Boilermakers pulled away. A net violation followed by a solo block from Turner and a blocking pairing of Turner and Jones made it 19-16 Boilers. A pair of kills from Davis put Purdue up 21-18 and forced IU to use its final timeout. Up just one at 21-20, Turner and Drews pounded down kills and a Hoosier hitting error helped the Boilermakers to a 24-20 lead and their first chance at set point. Two serves later, senior Anna Drewry pounded down a kill to seal the win.
Purdue started Set 2 strong as well, scoring seven of the first 10 points in the 25-20 win, including an ace by Cramer and putaways by four different players: Drewry, Turner, Drews and Jones. Two more Turner kills and a solo block by sophomore Val Nichol made it a five point game at 10-5. Indiana came back to tie it up at 12 with help from a trio of blocks, but the Boilers responded with a 5-1 run. A Drews kill started the rally, which also featured an ace by Neill and two blocks by Jones. Purdue worked its advantage to six at 21-15 after a handful of Hoosiers miscues and a kill by Nichol. The Hoosiers made it a three-point game at 23-20, but a kill by Drews and a solo block by Jones capped the set. Turner had six kills as the Boilers outhit IU .286 to .178, thanks in part to five blocks.
Indiana outhit the Boilermakers .297 to .286 in the final set, but Turner poured in eight kills and hit .538 in the stanza to help secure the 25-23 Purdue win. A trio of Turner putaways and an ace by Neill helped the Boilers to an 8-5 edge, but Indiana scored five straight to take a 10-8 lead. Nichol, Davis, Drews and Turner registered kills as Purdue chipped away, eventually tying the score at 12 and 13. Another Turner putaway and back-to-back blocks by Turner and Jones put Purdue back on top 16-13. Indiana would not go quietly, however, knotting the score at 17, 18 and 19. A Turner kill and a pair of stuffs by Drewry, involving Nichol and Drews, pushed the Boilermaker lead to three at 22-19. A pair of Purdue miscues helped the Hoosiers to a 22-22 tie. Purdue took a timeout and scored the next two points out of the break on a Drews kill and an ace by junior Hilliary Fox. Indiana got a kill from top hitter Jordan Haverly to thwart the Boilermakers' first match point chance at 24-22, but Turner finished the night with her 18th kill.
The No. 22 Boilermakers finish off the regular season with a 7 p.m. Friday match with the Wisconsin Badgers. The team will celebrate the careers of its four seniors: Anna Drewry, Courtney Gosewisch, Amanda Miller and Ariel Turner prior to the match.
