WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue wrestling team split a pair of duals in its home-opening event on Saturday, blasting 23rd-ranked Old Dominion, 29-9, but falling to seventh-ranked Missouri, 23-9. No. 15 senior Ivan Lopouchanski and sophomore Pat Robinson went 2-0 on the day to lead the Boilermakers, who open the season 1-1 in dual competition.
Missouri was the big winner on the day, going 2-0 as a team and winning 17-of-20 individual matches. The Tigers blanked Old Dominion to start the day, 35--1, in a bout that featured a forfeit and a pair of major decisions. No. 6 junior Alan Waters claimed on of his two major decisions on the day at 125 pounds, downing Rob Deutsch, 10-2, while 17th-ranked sophomore Drake Houdashelt took an 11-1 major from Alexander Richardson at 149 pounds.
The Boilermakers got their day going in the second meet of the day, winning seven-of-10 in their victory over the Monarchs. Old Dominion took the early lead on a 7-2 decision for sophomore Jerome Robinson, but the Boilermakers quickly turned the tables, winning three in a row for a 13-3 lead. Eighth-ranked junior Cashé Quiroga bested 20th-ranked junior Scott Festejo at 133 pounds, 11-6, and sophomore Brandon Nelsen rallied from behind to stick previously undefeated Chris Mecate at the 6:09 mark at 141 pounds. Lopouchanski capped the run with an impressive 10-2 major decision over Richardson.
The Monarchs halted the run with a 4-3 decision for No. 15 John Nicholson at 157 pounds over Purdue senior captain Tommy Churchard, but the Boilermakers got things rolling again at 165 pounds on the strength of Robinson's first career dual victory. Robinson needed just 4:42 to score his third career fall, pinning Rodin Ndandula after building up a 6-1 advantage. Freshman Chad Welch followed with a 6-2 decision over junior Billy Curling at 174 pounds, Purdue sophomore Patrick Kissel dominated at 184 pounds in a 10-1 major decision over freshman Austin Coburn and No. 16 junior Braden Atwood made it four in a row with a 5-2 decision in his career debut at 197 pounds. Old Dominion closed out the meet with a 3-1 sudden victory for sophomore Matt Tourdot at heavyweight.
"This was a solid win for our team," said Boilermaker head coach Scott Hinkel. "It was nice to see our guys string some wins together, at three or four at a time, and feed off of each other's victories."
The Boilermakers were not so fortunate in the finale, as they were unable to get things going against the Tigers. Waters matched his opening competition at 125 pounds, downing 19th-ranked Purdue junior Camden Eppert, and Missouri followed up with an 11-5 decision at 133 pounds, where ninth-ranked senior Nathan McCormick topped Purdue freshman Danny Sabatello. The Tigers made it three in a row at 141 pounds as 18th-ranked senior Nicholas Hucke edged Nelsen, 6-5.
The Boilermakers used a pair of thrillers to cut the team score to 10-6 after 149 and 157 as Lopouchanski went to sudden victory with Houdashelt, using a penalty point for grabbing head gear to win 4-3 after a stalling call sent it to overtime, while Churchard went to sudden victory with 16th-ranked junior Kyle Bradley at 157, winning 11-9. Churchard trailed early in the third period after Bradley scored an escape and a takedown to make it 8-5, but the Boilermaker senior captain rallied with a reversal and a takedown in the closing seconds to force overtime, and sealed the match with another takedown. Robinson made it three in a row for the Boilermakers and cut the lead to one, 10-9, using takedowns in the first and third periods to earn his second win of the day.
It was all Missouri the rest of the way, scoring wins at 174, 184, 197 and 285 to seal up the team score and earn the victory. Kissel was the closest to come to victory, falling at 184 pounds to No. 8 senior Mike Larson, 3-1.
The Boilermakers will have a handful of wrestlers in action tomorrow at the Michigan State Open, but the full team returns to the mat next Saturday at the Northern Illinois Duals.
