LANSING, Mich. - Purdue wrapped up the MSU Spartan Invite on Sunday and came away with multiple champions. The Boilermakers had both teams in the Flight A doubles final as well as the singles Flight A Champion.
Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum continued her stellar freshman fall. The rookie won the Flight A Singles Title on Sunday with a straight sets win over Marina Bohrer of Michigan State. Bernard-Feigenbaum won the match 6-4, 6-3. The New York City native is now 6-0 in singles play for her career after winning Flight Four at the IU Invitational last week. Bernard-Feigenbaum knocked off individuals from Xavier, Wisconsin, Akron, and Michigan State en route to her championship.
Imogen Golder went 2-1 in Flight B of the singles tournament. Golder qualified for the third place match, but did not play. Golder knocked off individuals from Xavier and Michigan State before falling to Lauren Chypyha of Wisconsin, 7-5, 1-6, (10-3). Chypyha went on to win the flight.
Gisella Pere went 2-1 in Flight C of the singles tournament. Pere dropped her first match of the tournament to Ksenia Berestetska of Akron in three sets. The loss dropped Pere to the consolation bracket. There, she went 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win and a 6-2, 6-0 victory over players from Cleveland State and Xavier, respectively. Pere was scheduled to play Kristel Sanders of Ball State in the finals, but the match was not played.
Claudia Escribens had a great showing in the Flight D singles draw. The freshman went 3-1 including an appearance in the flight championship match. Escribens knocked off individuals from Dayton, Ball State, and Miami-Ohio, all in straight sets. In the finals, she fell to Kathryn Sharples of Illinois-Chicago, 6-1, 6-3. Sharples did not drop a set in the tournament and Escribens was her lone opponent not to be blanked in at least one set.
In doubles, the Boilermakers dominated. Bernard-Feigenbaum and Escribens teamed to go 4-0. The duo blanked a pair from Miami-Ohio, beat a tandem from Xavier, and knocked off a team from Akron to make it to the Flight A Doubles Championship. Pere and Golder teamed to make Purdue's other doubles team. The senior pair beat teams from Toledo, Marquette, and Michigan State to also qualify for the Flight A Championship. Instead of compete against each other, the two Purdue teams played alternate matches. Bernard-Feigenbaum and Escribens beat a Michigan State pair, 9-8 (5), while Pere and Golder knocked off a tandem from Akron, 8-5.
The Boilermakers next action is scheduled to be the ITA Regionals which Purdue will host. The event will take place from Oct. 18-22 at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
