WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The Purdue swimming and diving teams each emerged victorious on the first full Saturday of action of the new season at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center, winning the seven-school, 11-team Indiana Intercollegiates meet.
The Purdue men scored 786.5 points to place first of the six schools with men competing.
The Purdue women finished with 807.5 points to outscore the five teams with women's competitors in attendance.
Danny Tucker (50 and 100 freestyle), Brian Kiel (100 backstroke and 200 free) and Layne Rogers (1- and 3-meter diving) each posted a pair of individual victories for the men. Tucker out touched teammate Chuck Destro by one one-hundredth of a second in the 50 free in the most exciting finish of the day. Lyam Dias won the 200 IM and was the team's top finisher in the 100 breast.
Allie Davis won the 200 freestyle to complete a weekend in which she won individual freestyle events of 200, 500 and 1000 yards in length. She also swam the leadoff leg on the victorious 200 free relay Saturday. The freshman was selected as the team's Boilermaker Award recipient. She received the honor from Tracy Glaser, who was recognized by the team after Friday night's dual win against Miami (Ohio). Glaser won her heat of the 100 butterfly Saturday.
Alec LaMothe won the 500 free and finished second to Kiel in the 200 free. Freshmen Collin Baker (200 IM), Nate Hopkins (200 free) and Danny Conway (100 breast) each touched first in their heats. But by winning all four men's diving events of the weekend, Rogers enjoyed the best weekend of any of the men's newcomers. The men's divers competed Friday along with the women.
Carly Mercer was an individual winner in the 200 IM, posting her third victory of the weekend in a different event. Lizzy Lyon won the 500 free and finished second to Mercer in the 200 IM. Fellow freshman Stephanie Schlobohm touched first in her heat of the 100 breaststroke and was the Boilers' top finisher in the 100 fly. Samantha Feulner won her heat of the 50 free and swam on the victorious 200 free relay team with Rhiannon Sheets, Nora Brolsma and Davis.
Emily Fogle and Sarah Boylen each captured their heats of the 100 back. Additionally, Fogle swam the breaststroke leg on the victorious 200 medley relay team that also featured Amy Katz, Kylie Vogel and Lauren Gustafson. Vogel was the runner up individually in the 50 free.
Jacob Robinson (100 breast) was also a heat winner for the men and Destro added a second-place finish in the 100 fly to his runner-up showing in the 50 free.
The Purdue men return to action next Saturday (Oct. 27) for a 2 p.m. dual meet at Miami (Ohio). Both teams will compete the weekend of Nov. 2-3 for road duals at Notre Dame and Northwestern.
