Boilermakers 7-1 in Singles on Day Two of Regionals

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team competed in the main draw of doubles and singles on day two of the Ohio Valley Regional. The Boilermakers went 7-1 in singles and 5-3 in doubles on the Basham Courts at the Schwartz Tennis Center.

Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Mara Schmidt each went 3-0 on Friday with two wins in doubles and a win in singles. The two teamed as doubles partners and picked up a pair of 8-4 victories. The Purdue freshman-junior combo is the lone Boilermaker tandem remaining in the doubles main draw. Bernard-Feigenbaum and Schmidt will play the No. 2 seed of Alyssa Hibberd and Tiffany Welcher from Memphis on Saturday at 9 a.m. ET. The Memphis duo has dropped only one game in doubles for the tournament.

In singles, Bernard-Feigenbaum defeated Tiffany Tavares of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-1 in a dominant performance. She moves on to play the No. 3 seed of the singles main draw, Marie Casares of Vanderbilt. Schmidt, who is the No. 10 seed in the singles draw, knocked off Frances Altick of Vanderbilt in a back-and-forth match. Schmidt held on in the first set, 7-6 (6), before cruising to a 6-2 second set win.

Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal went 1-1 in doubles. The sophomore pair dropped their opening match before picking up an 8-4 win in the back draw. Claudia Escribens and Krisztina Kapitany also went 1-1 as a doubles team. The freshmen won their opening round match, 8-2, before falling, 8-4, to the No. 6 seeded team in the tournament. Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder also had one win and one loss in doubles. The seniors won their opening round match, 8-4, before falling to the No. 5 seed by the same score.

Purdue had a terrific day in singles with seven wins including the aforementioned victories by Bernard-Feigenbaum and Schmidt. Pere had a 6-2, 6-2 win over Courtney Earnest of Ball State in the afternoon. She advances to play Caitlin McGraw of Kentucky on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. Golder was on the court for just over 30 minutes in singles. She knocked off Alex Bastock of Wright State, 6-1, 6-0.

Kapitany also won in straight sets for Purdue. She beat Jenna Nurik of Chattanooga, 6-0, 6-4 and advances to play the No. 15 seed Jessica Stiles of Kentucky at noon on Saturday. Xepoleas breezed through her opening singles match. The No. 7 seed in the tournament defeated Ayaka Terashi of Ball State 6-0, 6-3.

Escribens was involved in one of the most exciting matches of the day. After playing six matches since Thursday morning, the Purdue freshman had her first singles match of the main draw against Flavia Nagayama of Middle Tennessee State. In a match that lasted over three and a half hours, Escribens rallied to win 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Escribens is now 6-1 overall in the tournament and will face the No. 11 seed in the singles tournament, Ashleigh Antal of Vanderbilt, at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.
