BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 17 Purdue volleyball team could not hold off a determined Indiana squad Tuesday night, falling 3-1. The Hoosiers won the match 25-22, 25-23, 15-25, 25-21.
Purdue outhit the Hoosiers .191 to .088 and outblocked Indiana 15 to 10.5. Senior Ariel Turner moved up the Boilermaker career listings for kills (3rd, 1642) and hitting attempts (2nd, 4814) as she piled up a match-high 15 putaways and added five blocks. Sophomore Kiki Jones added 12 kills, just her second career double-digit effort, and put up seven blocks. Senior Anna Drewry added seven kills and redshirt junior Catherine Rebarchak chipped in five.
Drewry led Purdue at the net with eight blocks, while Jones added seven and Turner and redshirt junior Rachel Davis contributed five stuffs apiece. Redshirt junior Carly Cramer led the backcourt defense with 18 digs and also served up Purdue's lone ace. Junior Hilliary Fox added 11 digs.
Purdue scored three of the first four points of the night, including kills by Turner and Jones. Indiana battled back to take a 7-6 lead. A kill by Nichol and an IU miscue put the Boilermakers back on top. A solo stuff by Turner made it 10-9, but the Hoosiers scored four straight to go ahead 13-10. Purdue trailed by as many as six, at 18-12, but cut the margin to three at 20-17 after three straight Indiana hitting errors. Down 24-18, the Boilermakers turned away four IU set point chances, with kills from Turner and Jones and a pair of Hoosier errors. Indiana took a timeout at 24-22 and came back with a putaway to take the Set 25-22.
The teams split the first 18 points of Set 2, with neither owning more than a one-point edge. Four different players - Drewry, Jones, Turner and Drews - tallied kills for Purdue in the first half of the stanza. Indiana pushed ahead by two points at 11-9. Two Hoosier errors and a kill by Turner made it 14-12, but IU stretched its lead to seven at 20-13. The Boilermakers made a comeback, scoring six of the next seven, to cut the deficit to two at 21-19. Kills by Turner and redshirt junior Katie Griffin and a block by Jones and Davis highlighted the stretch. Down 23-19, Purdue made another run at the Hoosiers, scoring four straight, including a stuff by Drewry and Davis and an ace by Jones, which knotted the score at 23. Indiana managed two kills, including an overpass putaway to cap a 25-23 win.
The Boilermakers led Set 3 from start to finish and led by as many as 12 en route to a 25-15 win. Purdue posted five blocks in the set and held IU to a -.061 hitting percentage. The Boilermakers jumped out to a quick 8-4 lead thanks to two stuff by Jones and Davis and an ace by Cramer. Indiana cut the margin to two at 8-6, but Purdue outscored the Hoosiers 7-1 to go ahead 15-7. Drewry pounded down two kills and Griffin and Davis added putaways in the stretch. Indiana was within five at 15-10, but Purdue countered with an 7-0 run, including three kills and a block by Rebarchak, to go ahead 22-10. A net violation gave the Boilermakers their first chance at the set at 24-13. A Jones kill two plays later ended it at 25-15.
Indiana held off a second-half Boilermaker run for a 25-21 win in Set 4. After trailing 3-0, Purdue scored six of the next seven, including a trio of blocks by Jones, to go ahead 6-4. Two more stuffs made it 9-7 Boilermakers, but Indiana countered with three straight points to go up 10-9. Purdue tallied four of the next five, including three Hoosier errors, to regain the lead at 13-11. IU used a 4-0 run to go up 15-13 at the media timeout. The Boilermakers played from behind and eventually tied it at up at 17 after kills from Turner and Jones. The teams tied again at 18, but Indiana pushed ahead by four at 23-19. A pair of blocks by Drewry, involving Nichol and Turner, cut the margin to two and forced a Hoosier timeout. A kill and block, however, sealed the upset win for Indiana at 25-21.
The No. 17 Boilermakers (14-6, 5-4 Big Ten) return to action at 8 p.m. ET Saturday when they take on the No. 10 Minnesota Golden Gophers in Minneapolis.
