COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 17 Boilermaker volleyball team posted a 3-1 win over No. 19 Ohio State Saturday night, thanks to a tough defensive effort at the net and in the backcourt. Purdue won the match 25-19, 25-15, 20-25, 25-23 and outblocked the Buckeyes 16.5 to 9 in the effort.
Senior Ariel Turner led the offense with 16 kills, while also adding 12 digs. Redshirt junior Catherine Rebarchak also reached double-digits with 10 kills. Freshman Annie Drews (8), sophomore Kiki Jones (7), senior Anna Drewry (6) and sophomore Val Nichol (4) rounded out the Purdue offensive attack.
Redshirt junior Carly Cramer paced the backcourt defense with 16 digs, followed by Turner (12) and freshman Amanda Neill (12). Jones led the Boilermakers at the net with six blocks. Turner and Drewry each added five stuffs, while Nichol was credited with four.
Ohio State scored the first three points of the match, but Purdue piled up the points when it counted, wrapping up a 25-19 win with five straight points. The Boilermakers overcame the early deficit, taking their first lead at 5-4 after blocks by Drewry, Jones and Turner and putaways by Turner, Jones and Nichol. The teams tied at 5, 7, 8 and 9, before Purdue managed to go up by two at 11-9 on a Drewry kill. The Buckeyes owned a brief lead at 13-12, but the Boilermakers rallied to a four-point edge at 18-14. Ohio State cut the margin to one at 20-19, but Purdue took a timeout and closed out the stanza with five straight scores. The Boilermakers tallied seven blocks in the stanza.
Turner tallied six kills and five other Boilermakers also had putaways as Purdue outhit OSU .371 to .000 in a 25-15 Set 2 win. The Buckeyes scored three of the first four points in the set, but the Boilermakers responded with seven straight points to go ahead 8-3. Three players had kills in the stretch, while a block by Jones and Nichol and an OSU miscue capped the run. Purdue pushed the margin to eight at 15-7 on a triple block by Drewry, Drews and Turner. Nichol also had an ace as the Boilermakers upped the advantage. The Buckeyes rallied to within five twice, at 16-11 and again at 18-13, but that sparked a 6-0 Purdue run to make it 24-13. Turner, Rebarchak and Nichol had kills in the rally. Ohio State held off two Boilermaker set point attempts with a kill and a hitting error, but Rebarchak sealed the 25-15 win to give Purdue a 2-0 edge in the match.
Rebarchak bolstered the Purdue offense with eight kills in Set 3, but it was not enough as Ohio State extended the match with a 25-20 win. OSU jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead, but the Boilermakers pulled within two at 8-6 after three-straight Rebarchak putaways. The Buckeyes pushed their advantage to nine at 21-12, but Purdue rallied, cutting the margin to four at 21-17 after two more Rebarchak kills and a stuff by Drewry and Davis. Down 24-18, Rebarchak kept the going and the Boilermakers got help from an OSU miscue to prolong the stanza, but an Emily Danks kill sealed the Buckeye win at 25-20.
Set 4 featured 15 tie scores and six lead changes, but the Boilermakers held the final advantage in a come-from-behind 25-23 win. Turner put down four kills as Purdue rallied from a 21-19 deficit in the stanza to gain the victory. The Boilermakers led 6-3 in the early part of the set, capped by a solo stuff by Rebarchak. The Buckeyes tied it up at 6. The teams traded points over the next eight serves leading to a 10-10 score. OSU scored three straight to go ahead 13-10 and force a Purdue timeout. The Boilermakers scored five of the next six to regain the advantage at 15-14 on a block by Davis and Jones. Ohio State tied the score at 15 and 16 before pushing ahead to a 19-17 advantage. A block by Drews and Drewry and a hitting error made it 19 all. A hitting error miscue and an OSU kill set up the 21-19 Buckeye lead, a Purdue timeout and the comeback effort.
The Boilermakers (14-5, 5-3 Big Ten) return to action at 8 p.m. Tuesday when they take on Indiana in Bloomington, Ind., live on the Big Ten Network.
