BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Purdue women's tennis team wrapped up day one at the IU Invite on Friday and had solid results. The Boilermakers went 3-2 in singles and 4-2 in doubles on the opening day.
Daniela Vidal is the lone Boilermaker in flight one. That flight is the only one that is playing a round robin format whereas the other three are in bracketed play. Vidal drew the eight seed and faced Molly O'Koniewski of Notre Dame, the three seed, in the opening match. Despite taking the first set, 6-4, Vidal couldn't hang on in the second set and dropped it, 7-6 (5). The third set was a super tiebreaker and there, Vidal fell, 10-4. The sophomore will face the No. 1 seed on Saturday, Britney Sanders of Notre Dame, at 11 a.m. ET.
Krisztina Kapitany picked up her first singles win as Boilermaker. Kapitany, playing in flight two, knocked off Sophie Garre of Indiana, 7-6 (5), 2-1 ret. She will face Chrissie McGaffigan of Notre Dame at 11 a.m. McGaffigan knocked off Ana Gomez Aleman of Kansas State in a third set super tiebreak. Imogen Golder also competed in flight two for Purdue. The senior knocked off Carli Wischoff of Kansas State, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4). Golder will face Jithme Jayawickrema of Indiana at 11 a.m. on the opposite side of the bracket as Kapitany.
In flight three, Gisella Pere had a tough day. She was matched with Katherine White of Notre Dame and lost, 6-3, 6-3. Pere moves to the consolation side of the bracket and will play Shannon Murdy of Indiana. Murdy lost to a Kansas State player in straight sets.
Tess Bernard-Feigenbaum and Claudia Escribens are in flight four for Purdue. Bernard-Feigenbaum had a first round bye and will face Carmen Borau Ramos of Kansas State at 11 a.m. Ramos knocked off JoHanna Manningham of Notre Dame, 6-2, 6-1. On the opposite side of the bracket, Escribens was lights out. She knocked off Miranda Erisman in perfect fashion, 6-0, 6-0, in her first career match. Escribens will face Ashley Tiefel of Colorado at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
In doubles, Kapitany and Escribens paired up and won their first match of the day. The freshmen beat St. Hill and Borau of Kansas State, 8-3. In their next match, Kapitany and Escribens fell to Sanders and Sabacinski of Notre Dame, 8-6. Pere and Golder also won their first match of the day. The seniors beat Manningham and Tiefel of Colorado, 8-1. In the second round, though, the senior lost to the IU pair of Hureau and Garre, 8-4. Pere and Golder will face Gleason and O'Koniewski of Notre Dame in a consolation bracket. On the opposite side of that bracket is the freshmen duo that will face McGaffigan and White of Notre Dame.
Vidal teamed with Bernard-Feiganbaum for the first time and the duo had an excellent day. In the first match of the day, the Purdue tandem knocked off Chupa and Klyczek of Indiana, 8-3. Next, Vidal and Bernard-Feiganbaum defeated the Notre Dame pair of Gleason and O'Koniewski, 8-3. The Purdue pair will play Kauss and Murdy of Indiana in the semifinals on Saturday.
