Four Boilermakers in Semifinal Draws

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Purdue men's tennis team wrapped up day two at the Purdue Invitational and four Boilermakers are in the semifinals of their respective singles main draws.

Diego Acosta and Mark Kovacs continued to cruise through the singles `A' draw on Saturday. In his first match, Acosta faced Adam Krull of Xavier. There, he dominated the first set, 6-1, before falling in the second, 6-4. In the third, though, Acosta returned to his strong tennis and won 6-0. Next, Acosta faced Ross Vanderploeg of Western Michigan in the quarterfinals. Acosta started slow and lost the first set, 6-4. From there, though, he rallied. In the second set, the sophomore won 6-2 before a heated third set where Acosta won 6-4. The Ecuadorian will play Zack Mueck of Xavier at 9 a.m. ET in the semifinals on Sunday.

Kovacs had a smoother route to the semis than Acosta. The junior knocked off Austin Woldmoe of Butler in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Kovacs faced Tomas Stillman of Toledo in the quarterfinals. There, the Hungarian dominated the first set, 6-3, before holding on in the second set, 7-6 (4). Kovacs will face Michael Tenzer of Green Bay at 9 a.m.

Aaron Dujovne also played in the singles `A' draw on Saturday. Dujovne knocked off Matt Kuelker of Cleveland State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, before facing Tenzer. Tenzer held on to beat the junior, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Dujovne and Acosta withdrew from the doubles tournament by way of a walkover and therefore did not face Woldmoe and Weldon of Butler.

Evan Hawkins is in the singles `B' draw semifinals. Hawkins cruised through his two matches in straight sets. First, he knocked off Pulok Bhattacharya of Butler, 7-5, 6-1. Next, he faced Louis Sacks of IUPUI in the quarterfinals. Hawkins won, 6-3, 6-1. The Boilermaker sophomore will face Kyle Johnson of DePaul at 9 a.m.

Szymon Tatarczyk is the other Boilermaker in the semifinals. The junior is in the `C' draw. Tatarczyk faced Aaron Wong of Western Michigan in his first match. There, the Boilermaker cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory. In the quarterfinals, Tatarczyk defeated Brandon Carman of Xavier, 6-4, 6-2. The junior will face Grant Adams of Toledo at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Arthur Dobradin will play in a consolation match on Sunday against VanMeter of Cleveland State at 9 a.m. The Boilermakers do not have anyone left in the doubles draws.
