The Boilermakers (37-9) won their 16th consecutive true midweek game dating back to March 2011 and improved to 10-2 at home this year.
Charles scored his 169th career run during the three-run second inning that gave the Boilers the lead for good. All three runs scored with two outs as Charles, Cameron Perkins and Kevin Plawecki recorded three consecutive run-scoring singles.
Purdue starter Robert Ramer (6-0) surrendered runs in only one of his six innings, improving to 13-0 in his career. He worked six innings of three-run ball, striking out five. The Boilermakers are 15-1 in his 16 career starts. He has been the starting pitcher in 10 of the 16 games during the current midweek win streak. He did not issue a walk for the sixth time in his seven starts this year.
Ryan Bridges connected for his first home run of the season and fifth career to leadoff the third inning. It was the senior's first longball at Lambert Field.
Purdue also scored four two-out runs in the sixth inning to blow the game open. Barrett Serrato and Sean McHugh each delivered a two-run double. Tyler Spillner also had an RBI double in the win.
The Boilermakers turned a pair of inning-ending 6-4-3 double plays in the win. Ramer induced a David Miller to Charles to Bridges twin killing to erase a one-out single in the fifth inning. There were two men aboard in the eighth when Jack DeAno brought the frame to end with a similar ground ball to shortstop.
McHugh posted his first career three-hit game. Spillner, Charles, Perkins, Serrato, Bridges and Stephen Talbott all finished with two hits.
Purdue continues the final homestand in the history of Lambert Field Friday when it opens a three-game Big Ten series against Michigan. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.
