Women's Tennis Downs Hawkeyes, 6-1

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The No. 34 Purdue women's tennis team dominated its match against No. 72 Iowa on Sunday at the Schwartz Tennis Center. The Boilermakers won, 6-1.

Purdue (12-4, 4-3 Big Ten) started the afternoon off by sweeping the doubles point. Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt were first as the top pair for Purdue knocked off Sonja Molnar and Morven McCulloch, 8-5. Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder then clinched the doubles point for the Boilermakers. The juniors knocked off Shelby Talcott and Ally Majercik, 8-4. Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal completed the sweep with an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Katie Zordani and Ellen Silver.

Iowa (7-11, 1-6) had trouble getting things going in singles. Pere increased the Purdue lead to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 thrashing of Majercik at No. 6. Vidal then made the score 3-0 in favor of the Boilermakers with her 14th dual match singles win of the season. She won, 6-2, 6-1 over Silver.

Schmidt clinched the match for Purdue with a dominant win of her own on the No. 3 court. Schmidt dominated Zordani, 6-1, 6-2. Golder made the score 5-0 with a solid win at No. 5. The junior beat Christina Harazin, 6-4, 6-1.

The Hawkeyes finally got on the board with a win at No. 2. McCulloch knocked off Xepoleas, 7-6 (11), 6-4. Moments later, Rabot ended the match with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 1-0 (8) win at No. 1 over Talcott.

Purdue improves to 21-24 all-time against the Hawkeyes.

The Boilermakers will be on the road next week for a pair of conference matches. On Friday, they will play at Wisconsin at 3:30 p.m. ET. Sunday, Purdue will play at Minnesota at 1 p.m. ET.
