Huskers Edge Boilermakers, 4-3

April 6, 2012

LINCOLN, Neb. - The No. 72 Purdue men's tennis team dropped a tough match at No. 68 Nebraska on Friday. The Boilermakers lost 4-3 on the NU Varsity Courts after a weather delay forced the match inside.

Nebraska (10-9, 3-3 Big Ten) started strong by taking the doubles point. The Huskers won on courts one and two before the Boilermakers took the final court. At No. 1, Chris Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim beat Aaron Dujovne and Diego Acosta, 8-4. The No. 2 team of Robert Schulze and Andre Stenger knocked off Szymon Tatarczyk and Krisztian Krocsko by the same score. Purdue's Mark Kovacs and Pawel Poziomski beat Stefan Gollner and Eric Sock at No. 3, 8-5.

Purdue (7-10, 1-4) split the singles matches with the Huskers, but that wouldn't be enough to win. The Boilermakers won singles matches at Nos. 3, 5 and 6. Acosta won at No. 3 knocking off Schulze, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6). Dujovne won at No. 5 over Gollner, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4. Hawkins was the final Boilermaker to win as he knocked off Tom Blackwell at No. 6, 6-2, 6-2. Kovacs was able to force at third set at No. 2, but fell 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The all-time series between Purdue and Nebraska is now tied at one win each.

The Boilermakers will be back in action on Sunday as they travel to Iowa. The Hawkeyes lost again on Friday and now fall to 1-16 on the season and 0-6 in the Big Ten. They have also lost 14 matches in a row. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. ET.
