BATON ROUGE, La. - The Purdue men's golf team fired the field's best second round on Saturday and finished the opening day of the LSU Invitational in third place with a total of 585 (+9).
The Boilermakers bounced back from a rough morning with a five-under 283 in the second round, the best in the 12-team field by five strokes. Purdue was one of just two teams in red numbers in Saturday's afternoon session.
The Boilers will enter final-round play on Sunday 17 strokes behind tournament-leading Iowa and 11 shots in back of host LSU, which stands in second place.
After shooting 74 (+2) in the day's opening round, Ziegler shot 68 (-4) in the afternoon to bring his total to 142 (-2) for the day and move into a tie for fifth place. His second-round effort was the second-best in the field, and his best round as a Boilermaker.
Senior Tyler Duncan was also below par in the second round on Saturday, posting a 69 (-3) to run his total for the day to 143 (-1). The Columbus, Ind., native stands in an eighth-place tie heading into Sunday's final round.
Freshman Justin Cho carded four-over 148 on Saturday to grab a share of 19th place after 36 holes, while sophomor Adam Schenk entered into a tie for 36th place with a total of 152 (+8).
