AUBURN, Ala. - Emily Fogle of Purdue women's swimming and diving broke the program record in the 200 breaststroke for the fifth time while winning the consolation final on the final night of the NCAA Championships, earning Honorable Mention All-America recognition for the second day in a row.Fogle finished the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:08.28 in the evening finals, improving on her preliminary time (2:09.84) by more than a second and half. Her finals time ranked as the fourth fastest of the night among the 16 swimmers that competed in the two heats. She qualified for the consolation final by placing 12th in the prelims.
Fogle had lowered the 200 breaststroke program record to 2:08.72 at the Big Ten Championships last month. She first eclipsed the school record as a freshman at the 2010 Purdue Invitational and has now lowered the previous benchmark by more than seven seconds.
Rhiannon Sheets also competed Saturday in the 200 butterfly, finishing 35th in the preliminaries with a time of 1:59.11. She had qualified for the event with a school-record time of 1:56.67 at the Ohio State Invitational in December.
Lauren Roth also represented the Boilers at the NCAA Championships this week but opted to not compete in the 200 butterfly Saturday.
Fogle earned Honorable Mention All-America honors in the 100 breaststroke Friday as well. She is now a three-time Honorable Mention All-American for her performances at the national championship meet.
California repeated as the NCAA national champion, scoring 412.5 team points. Minnesota placed 11th as the highest-finishing Big Ten university. Fogle scored 14 team points with her finishes in the consolation finals of the breaststroke events to lead Purdue to a 31st-place finish.
The Boilermakers will have to bid adieu to Roth and her senior classmates but Fogle and Sheets highlight a large group of swimmers expected to return for the 2012-13 season.
