LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The No. 48 Purdue women's tennis team knocked off Louisville on Sunday, 5-2, to wrap up its two day Kentucky road trip this weekend.
Louisville (2-3) tried to get an early lead on the Boilermakers after winning at No. 1 doubles. Amelia Harris and Manuela Velasquez topped Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt, 8-6. Purdue, though, rallied back. Freshmen Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal evened the doubles score at one match apiece with an 8-5 win at No. 3. Imogen Golder and Gisella Pere then clinched the point with an 8-3 win at No. 2 over Mandy Brown and Rebecca Shine.
Purdue (3-1) increased its lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 3 singles. Schmidt breezed by Gabrielle Duncan, 6-1, 6-1. Vidal put the Boilermakers within one point of a clinch after she won at No. 4. Vidal knocked off Velasquez, 6-2, 6-0. Golder pulled out a win and clinched the match at No. 6. The junior knocked off Sarah Miller, 6-1, 6-3.
Xepoleas also got a win for the Boilermakers. The freshman needed three sets, but came out with the victory at No. 2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0. Her match was the last point for Purdue as the remaining two matches went to Louisville, both in a third set tiebreaker.
Purdue moves to 5-1 all-time against the Cardinals. The win also makes it three straight for the Boilermakers.
Purdue will be back in action on Friday when it hosts its home opener. The Boilermakers will take on Western Michigan at 3 p.m. ET at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
