GREENVILLE, N.C. - Maryland scored three times in an inning three times on a cold night at the ballpark, capitalizing on five errors by Purdue baseball to deal the Boilermakers their first loss of the young season, 11-1, in the second game for both teams at the Keith LeClair Classic hosted by East Carolina. The Terrapins (4-1) scored 11 unanswered runs after Purdue (4-1) tallied its lone run in the top of the first inning. Despite having at least one base runner in all but one inning, the Boilers managed only six hits while striking out nine times.
Maryland starting pitcher David Carroll (1-0) silenced the Purdue lineup, striking out eight over seven innings of four-hit ball. The only run he surrendered was an unearned tally.
The Terrapins, meanwhile, scored four unearned runs against Lance Breedlove (1-1), who did not issue a walk while striking out five. The five errors were committed by five different players, including a pair of miscues in the second inning that helped lead to a three-run rally for Maryland. The Boilermakers had committed only four errors in their first four games before Saturday night.
Eric Charles was the only Purdue player to collect multiple hits, singling in his first two at-bats on the way to finishing the day 5-for-8. He scored the Boilers' lone run of the game when he came around from second base on a two-out error by Maryland third baseman KJ Hockaday.
Cameron Perkins went 0-for-4 and failed to reach base safely for the first time since May 2010, snapping his streak of 67 consecutive games of reaching base at least once. He was robbed of a base hit by Maryland reliever Sander Beck in the eighth inning.
Four Purdue freshmen made their collegiate debuts, highlighted by a base hit for Kyle Upp in first at-bat and a 1-2-3 seventh inning of relief for Mike Gaglianese.
Already leading 5-1, Maryland blew the game open with three-run rallies in the sixth and eighth innings. Tim Kiene and Michael Montville connected for back-to-back home runs in the sixth inning. The Boilermakers were unable to retire either Tiene (3-for-4, 3 RBIs) or No. 5 hitter Kyle Convissar (4-for-5, 3 RBIs) on the night.
Maryland had its leadoff man reach base safely in six of the eight innings and that base runner ended up scoring five times.
Purdue concludes play at the four-team Keith LeClair Classic Sunday at 10 a.m. against Western Carolina. The Catamounts lost to Maryland (3-0) and East Carolina (3-1) Saturday.
