IOWA CITY, Iowa - For the second day in a row, Emily Fogle established a new program record and members of Purdue women's swimming and diving also posted a new relay benchmark and two other new records, highlighting day three of the Big Ten Championships.
Fogle shined in the 100 breastroke Friday, breaking the Purdue record twice on the day. She was one of four competitors to finish under one minute in the evening finals, taking third in the A final with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 59.53. It was her second new individual team record of the meet after setting a new benchmark in the 200 IM Thursday. She already owns the school record in the 200 breast, which is slated for Saturday.
Meanwhile, Fogle also eclipsed the longest-standing active mark in the Purdue record books. Lindsay Lange's record of 1:00.42 in the 100 breast had stood since 2003.
Francesca Marr put together a record-setting performance as well Friday. After breaking the team's freshman record in the 400 IM in the preliminaries, she came back in the finals and eclipsed the program record while winning the C final. Her finals time of 4:14.35 bested Erica Chandler's 2005 benchmark by more than 2 ½ seconds. Her time would also have been good enough for second in the B final of the event Friday.
Fogle also contributed to the new team record in the 400 medley relay. She teamed with Amy Katz, Rhiannon Sheets and Lauren Gustafson to finish with a time of 3:36.70. Together they eclipsed the program-record time established in 2011 by 1.43 seconds.
Katz's relay-opening 100 backstroke split of 55.06 represented a new Purdue freshman record and the third-fastest time in program history.
MacKenzie Tweardy and Sheets joined Fogle as Boilers to score points individually Friday. Sheets, a freshman from Carmel, Ind., qualified for the A final of the 100 fly, where she took sixth place for 13 team points. Tweardy, a freshman diver from Grafton, Ohio, placed third in the B final of the 3-meter springboard with a personal season-best score of 310.55.
The Boilermakers enjoyed a strong overall showing in the 100 fly. Sarah Boylen, Alex Todd and Nora Brolsma finished 2-3-7 in the C final, all posting personal season-best times. Boylen's time of 54.73 represents the fourth-fastest time in program history.
The Big Ten Championships conclude Saturday with preliminaries set for noon ET and the finals at 7:30 p.m. ET.
