IOWA CITY, Iowa - New individual program records posted by Emily Fogle in the 200 IM and Carly Marshall in the 50 freestyle highlighted day two of the Big Ten Championships for Purdue women's swimming and diving Thursday.
Fogle finished fourth in the A final of the 200 IM with a time of 1:58.94, eclipsing Allie Smith's 2010 team benchmark (1:58.96) by two hundredths of a second. She scored 15 team points for the Boilers with her strong showing. The sophomore moved up after qualifying for the A final by placing eighth overall in the afternoon preliminaries. Fogle is also the program record holder in the 200 breaststroke.
Marshall posted a time of 23.11 in the preliminaries, eclipsing classmate Rhiannon Sheets' Purdue freshman record from earlier this season by one hundredth of a second. Marshall went on to finish third in the C final.
Individually, Lauren Gustafson, Lauren Nichols and Megan Gallagher also scored team points by qualifying for the A or B finals Thursday. Gustafson made it to the A final of the 50 free after posting a team season-best time of 22.73 in the preliminaries, improving on her fourth-fastest mark in program history. She settled for eighth place in the A final, accounting for 11 team points.
Nichols also scored in the 50 free after posting a Purdue personal-best time in the prelims. Her time of 22.90 in the preliminaries matched the team-season best mark entering the week and now ranks fifth in program history. She scored 2 ½ team points after finishing in a tie for sixth place in the B final.
Gallagher scored as freshman by qualifying for the B final of the 500 free. She posted a personal season-best time of 4:46.62 in the preliminaries, the third fastest time in program history.
The Boilermakers enjoyed a strong showing in the 200 free relay. The quartet of Gustafson, Nichols, Carly Mercer and Marshall took fourth for 30 team points. Their time of 1:30.32 represents the second fastest in program history. Nichols has now been part of the four fastest 200 free relay teams in Purdue history. The fast field for the 200 free relay saw the top six finishing teams all eclipse the previous pool record. Wisconsin won the event with a new Big Ten record.
Lauren Roth, Kristen Gilson and Mercer also competed in C finals Thursday evening. Roth (second) and Gilson (fourth) finished in the top half of the C final of the 500 free and Mercer was fourth in the C final of the 50 free.
Francesca Marr finished one place shy of being a C final alternate for the 200 IM. The Englishwoman's time of 2:02.68 was only .27 hundredths of a second behind Smith's 2008 Purdue freshman record (2:02.41).
The Big Ten Championships continue Friday with preliminaries set for noon ET and the finals at 7:30 p.m. ET.
