IOWA CITY, Iowa - A new program record in the 200 medley relay highlighted the opening night of the Big Ten Championships Wednesday for Purdue women's swimming and diving.

Amy Katz, Emily Fogle, Kylie Vogel and Lauren Gustafson teamed up to finish the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:39.04, eclipsing the previous record time of 1:39.40 established at the 2011 Big Ten meet. Fogle also swam the breaststroke leg on the 2011 200 medley relay team.

The Boilermakers also posted a team season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800 free relay. Lauren Roth, Rhiannon Sheets, Colleen Drew and Carly Mercer teamed up to finish in 7:10.10, good for the third fastest time in program history.

Although it was an exhibition competition and did not count towards the team scores, Maddie Miskulin and MacKenzie Tweardy teamed up to finish second in the synchronized 3-meter diving. They scored 216.93 points on their six-dive list.

The 200 medley relay team improved on the previous team season-best time by 1.29 seconds. The previous season-best time with Vogel swimming the butterfly leg had been 1:42.31, meaning the quartet trimmed 3.26 seconds off its time. Wisconsin won the event with a new pool record time (1:37.34).

The 800 free relay team improved on the previous team season-best time by 5.29 seconds. Roth remains part of the four fastest 800 free relay quartets in program history. Indiana won the even with an NCAA automatic qualifying time (7:00.82) that doubled as a new meet, Big Ten and pool record.

The Big Ten Championships continue Thursday with preliminaries at noon ET and finals at 7:30 p.m. ET.
