WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Despite an outstanding crowd and welcome reception for U.S. Marine Matt Bowman at the Boilermakers' Military Appreciation Night in Holloway Gymnasium on Friday, the Purdue wrestling team suffered a 24-9 loss to seventh-ranked Big Ten rival Illinois. Purdue managed to win just three of the 10 matches, taking all three by decision, including two in overtime, falling to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in conference duals.
The Boilermakers got off to a slow start, dropping consecutive decisions at 141 and 149 pounds to fall into a 6-0 hole. Purdue freshman Brandon Nelsen was unable to hold off Illini junior Daryl Thomas at 141 pounds as Thomas rallied from behind to avenge a Midlands loss, 13-11, and 14th-ranked Illinois senior Eric Terrazas knocked off seventh-ranked Boilermaker junior Ivan Lopouchanski at 149 pounds, 10-4. Purdue was finally able to get on the scoreboard at 157 pounds as junior Tommy Churchard improved to 13-10 overall with a 11-9 sudden victory over Illinois sophomore Jackson Morse. Morse jumped out to a 7-2 lead over the first two periods, but Churchard started to chip away in the third, escaping and scoring three takedowns to knot the count at 9-9 and force extra time. The momentum all belonged to Churchard down the stretch as he quickly finished the match in the extra minute with his fourth straight takedown.
Illinois regrouped at 165 and 174 pounds as juniors Conrad Polz and Dan Stelter scored back-to-back decisions to give the Fighting Illini a 12-3 lead at the intermission. Polz had four takedowns in a 9-5 win over Purdue sophomore Kyle Mosier at 165, and Stelter followed with a 9-6 victory over Boilermaker freshman Drake Stein at 174.
The intermission was a special moment for the Boilermaker faithful as they honored Bowman with a presentation and special edition camouflage Purdue wrestling singlet, bringing the entire crowd to its feet. In conjunction with the dual, the Boilermakers auctioned off the 10 singlets worn on the evening, raising $1700 for the national Semper Fi Fund, a a nonprofit set up to provide immediate financial support for injured and critically ill members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families.
Purdue freshman Braden Atwood, ranked 19th in the nation at 184 pounds, swung things back the Boilermakers' direction after the break, edging Illini sophomore Tony Dallago by decision, 4-2. Atwood scored an early takedown in the bout and then began to pile up riding time, grinding Dallago from the top position. Dallago managed a reversal to tie the match in the waning seconds of the first, sending the bout to the second period, 2-2. Atwood continued his grind in the second, riding Dallago out, and then after a quick escape fought his way through the third to secure a 4-2 win after a riding-time point.
The Fighting Illini got a quick pin from sophomore Mario Gonzalez at 197 pounds as he needed 1:55 to score a fall over Purdue sophomore Justin Dinius, making the score 18-6 in Illinois' favor, but senior heavyweight Roger Vukobratovich kept the Purdue hopes alive as he outlasted Illinois junior Pat Walker for a 4-2 second sudden victory. The pair of big men traded escaped in regulation, and after a scoreless first overtime, traded escapes in the tie breaker to make it 2-2. Vukobratovich kept the pressure on in the third overtime period, using a series of feints to lure Walker off balance and spin behind for the winning takedown.
The return to the top of the lineup sealed things for the Fighting Illini as fifth-ranked 125-pound freshman Jesse Delgado and fifth-ranked 133-pound junior B.J. Futrell scored consecutive decisions to close the meet. Delgado scored a takedown in each period en route to an 8-3 decision over Purdue sophomore Camden Eppert, while Futrell held off a late rally from sixth-ranked Boilermaker sophomore Cashé Quiroga to earn a 13-6 decision.
The Boilermakers continue Big Ten Dual action next Thursday heading to sixth-ranked Ohio State. The match will be webcast live by the Big Ten Network and live results will be available at the @PurdueWrestling Twitter Page.
