COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The No. 72 Purdue men's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with 4-2 win over No. 63 Princeton.
Purdue (1-2) earned a much needed doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 1. Mark Kovacs and Diego Acosta gave the Boilermakers a quick doubles lead of 1-0 with an 8-3 win at No. 3 over Michael Lin and Yohei Shoji. Then, at No. 1, Szymon Tatarczyk and Aaron Dujovne had Purdue's best doubles win in years as the pair knocked off the No. 11 duo in the nation, Matt Siow and Matt Spindler, 8-6, to clinch the doubles point.
In singles, Princeton (0-2) quickly tied the score as No. 46 Matija Pecotic beat Kovacs at No. 1, 6-3, 6-2. Acosta regained the lead for Purdue at No. 4 after he knocked of Siow, 7-5, 6-3. Again, Princeton was able to tie the score as Zach McCourt won at No. 4, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Tatarczyk finally gave Purdue the lead for good as the sophomore knocked off Augie Bloom at No. 2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Then, freshman Evan Hawkins stepped in and clinched for the Boilermakers at No. 6 with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Ravi Yegya-Raman.
The Boilermakers went 1-1 over the ITA Kick Off Weekend with the loss coming to host Texas A&M. Purdue will open its home schedule this weekend with a double header on Saturday. Southern Illinois will be first as the match starts at 9 a.m. and Butler will follow at 5 p.m.
