CLEMSON, S.C. - The No. 59 Purdue women's tennis team pulled off a 4-1 upset over No. 46 Kansas State on Saturday afternoon and advance to the championship match on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET against the winner of No. 14 Clemson and UNC-Wilmington.
Purdue (1-0) started the afternoon off by taking the doubles point. First, freshmen Lynda Xepoleas and Daniela Vidal continued their dominance at No. 3 with an 8-2 win over Amina St. Hill and Carmen Borau Ramos. Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder took down Karla Bonacic and Carli Wischoff at No. 2, 8-4, to clinch the point while Jennifer Rabot and Mara Schmidt were locked in a seven-all tie with the No. 28 duo in the country, Petra Niedermayerova and Marketa Trousilova at No. 1, before the match was halted.
The Boilermakers increased their lead to 2-0 after Schmidt wrapped up another excellent performance at No. 3, knocking off St. Hill, 6-2, 6-4. Vidal stretched it to 3-0 with a win at No. 4. The freshman from Venezuela held on in a very competitive match to win, 7-5, 7-5.
Kansas State (1-2) finally got on the board with a win at No. 1. Purdue's Rabot was up against the nation's 14th ranked singles player, Niedermayerova. Rabot battled extremely well, but ended up succumbing to Wildcat, 7-5, 7-5.
Purdue was able to clinch the match with a three set thriller at No. 2. Xepoleas was up against the 94th ranked individual in the nation, Bonacic. The Boilermaker freshman took the first set, 7-5, but couldn't quite complete the sweep as she fell, 4-6, in the second including dropping the last two games. In the third set, Xepoleas fell in a 3-0 hole which made it five straight lost games, tough to overcome for anyone, especially a freshman. However, Xepoleas won the next two games to cut the deficit to 3-2 and eventually tied the score at four. Then, Xepoleas turned it on in the last two games to win and clinch for Purdue, 6-4.
The Boilers will be back in action Sunday for a chance for the championship. Live results can be found on PurdueSports.com as well as on the Purdue Women's Tennis page on Facebook. A full recap and results will be posted on PurdueSports.com following the completion of Sunday's match.
