Wrestling Wins Two At SIUE Cougar Duals

Dec. 18, 2011

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The Purdue wrestling team improved its record to 6-4 on Sunday, winning a pair of duals at the Southern Illinois-Edwardsville (SIUE) Cougar Duals at the Sam M. Vadalabene Center. The Boilermakers opened the day with a 44-3 win over Truman State University and followed with a 47-3 victory over SIUE, scoring bonus points in 15 of their 20 matches on the afternoon.

The Boilermakers had pins in five matches against Truman State, including three in a row from 165 to 184. Freshman125-pounder Luke Schroeder scored his first collegiate pin to open the match, sticking Bulldog freshman Daniel Karlskin in 3:36 after building an impressive 13-0 lead, and seventh-ranked sophomore Cashé Quiroga needed just 1:22 to put his opponent on his blades and give Purdue a 12-0 lead. Red-hot freshman Brandon Nelsen continued his impressive run at 141 pounds, notching a 17-5 major decision before the Bulldogs got on the board at 149 pounds as sophomore Ryan Maus, ranked seventh in NCAA Division II, edged Purdue freshman Frankie Porras, 6-2.

Junior Tommy Churchard got things going back Purdue's way at 157 pounds, earning a 9-2 decision over sophomore Devon Fenstermaker, and then the pins started rolling in. Sophomore Kyle Mosier turned sophomore Josh Wells at the 6:36-mark at 165 pounds, while freshmen Drake Stein and Braden Atwood each posted their falls in the first period, at 2:07 and 2:03, respectively. Purdue sophomore Justin Dinius earned his second win of the year at 197 pounds, topping freshman Helmut Rentschler, 6-2, and senior Roger Vukobratovich closed out the dual with a 26-11, first-period four-point technical fall over sophomore Joel Geders.

The Boilermakers' second bout brought more of the same as they notched four pins and a pair of majors in their rout of the host Cougars. SIUE forfeited the first two weight classes to spot Purdue a 12-0 lead and Nelsen scored his team-best seventh fall of the season, pinning sophomore Logun Taylor in 1:13, to make it 18-0. Porras rebounded from his loss to earn a 4-1 decision over junior Dillon Pousson at 149 pounds and Churchard posted a 12-4 major decision over junior Kyle Lowman at 157 pounds to give the Boilermakers a 25-0 lead.

Mosier and Stein doubled up in the fall column with back-to-back pins at 165 and 174 as Mosier stuck sophomore Gabe Hocum in 1:13 and Stein pinned sophomore Deshoun White in 3:56. Atwood notched a 9-0 major decision over freshman Cole Brandt at 184 pounds to make it a 41-0 advantage for the Boilermakers, but SIUE got into the scoring column at 197 pounds as sophomore Josh Wood edged Dinius, 3-0. Vukobratovich finished up the dual with his first fall of the season, sticking freshman Cole Rogers in 4:08.

"Our guys came out and took care of business this weekend," said Purdue head coach Scott Hinkel. "They did a good job of scoring bonus points whenever they could and looking for pins. We're happy with our performance and it's a good way to leave things as we head into break."

The Boilermakers will be off until Dec. 29-30, when they head to Northwestern University for the 49th-annual Midlands Championships.
