WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Sporting new uniforms, on a new court in a renovated Mackey Arena, the Purdue women's basketball team showed great promise in an 88-73 exhibition victory against Edinboro, ranked No. 23 in NCAA Division II.
The No. 17/21 Boilermakers were led by sophomore Courtney Moses who scored 25 points in 28 minutes of play. Moses recorded the most minutes on the team, as sixth-year head coach Sharon Versyp went to the bench early and often. All 12 Boilermakers on the active roster played before the end of the first half.
Purdue had a 47-31 advantage at the break, thanks in large part to Moses' 20 first-half points.
Redshirt sophomore KK Houser joined Moses as one of three Purdue players to score in double-figures. She finished with 19 points, hitting two three-pointers and 7-of-9 free throws, to go along with four assists and four steals in 21 minutes of play. Houser was seeing her first game action in Mackey Arena since tearing her ACL in the first-regular season contest of 2010-11.
Sam Ostarello was the third Boilermaker in double-figures, recording a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Ostarello pulled down 12 boards in the first period, plus, showed great improvement at the free throw line, hitting 6-of-7 free throws after shooting just 41 percent from the charity stripe last season.
The Boilermakers took their largest lead of the day, 63-39 on a two-pointer by Brittany Rayburn with 14:05 to play. The Fighting Scots would not go away, hitting a three-pointer on their next three trips down the floor to cut the lead to 19 points. For the game, Edinboro made 11-of-27 threes, and fittingly Hope Mancini hit a deep three-pointer with one tick on the clock to bring the final margin to 15 points at 88-73.
Nine of 12 Purdue players scored. Antionette Howard and freshman Liza Clemons tallied eight points apiece, while Alex Guyton scored seven and Brittany Rayburn recorded six. Ostarello was the only Boilermaker with double-figure rebounds, but six players picked up four rebounds each.
Six-foot-3 junior Samantha Blazetic paced the Scots with 18 points and 11 rebounds, as five Edinboro players scored in double-figures.
Purdue held a 57-36 advantage on the boards and outscored the Scots 20-6 on second chance points. The Boilermakers outscored Edinboro by 25 from the free throw line, making 27-of-34 free throws compared to the Scots 2-of-4. Purdue was whistled for just 10 fouls as compared to 26 for the visitors.
The Boilermakers return to action Sunday, Nov. 13 against IUPUI at 2 p.m. in the regular season opener. The game wraps up a week of festivities as part of the Mackey Celebration that will serve to rededicate the $99.5 million renovated facility.
