TROY, N.Y. - The Purdue wrestling had a tough outing Saturday, finishing 1-3 at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals hosted at Hudson Valley Community College, falling to 2-4 in head-to-head competition this season. The Boilermakers lost to Binghamton University, No. 16 Rutgers University and No. 10 Lehigh University, but finished the day with an upset-victory over 14th-ranked American University.
The Boilermakers were only able to string together 14 victories Saturday, led by senior 133-pounder Matt Fields, who was a perfect 4-0 with three pins and a major decision. Fields increased his career pin count to 16, moving himself to 19th in Purdue history and surpassing Boilermaker great Tim Dernlan on the record list. He also added six back points to his career total, surpassing Frank Laccone for ninth in Boilermaker history with 151. Other solid showings came from freshmen Braden Atwood and Drake Stein and junior Kyle Mosier as Atwood was 3-1 at 184 pounds, Stein was 2-1 at 174 pounds and Mosier was 2-2 at 165 pounds.
Purdue opened its day against Binghamton, winning four of the six matches en route to a 24-15 loss. Fields had an 11-0 major decision over junior Patrick Hunter, Mosier topped 2011 NCAA qualifier Matt Kaylor, 11-7, Stein notched a major decision over freshman Caleb Wallace and Atwood capped the scoring with a dominant 15-3 major decision over 20th-ranked 184-pound junior Nate Schiedel. The Boilermakers came up just short at 125 and 141 pounds, where they lost in sudden victory, and got some more bad news on the injury front as sixth-ranked junior Ivan Lopouchanski was hurt in an 18-2 technical fall loss to 10th-ranked Donnie Vinson. Purdue was already without No. 8 133-pound sophomore Cashé Quiroga and 11th-ranked 197 pound senior A.J. Kissel, and Lopouchanski sat out the rest of the afternoon on Saturday.
The second dual of the day came against Rutgers as the Scarlet Knights won seven of the 10 bouts on its way to a 28-15 over the Boilermakers. Fields had his first of three pins, sticking junior Daniel White in 6:32, while Atwood edged sophomore Dan Seidenberg, 2-0, and senior Roger Vukobratovich was leading previously-undefeated Rutgers sophomore Carl Buchholz in the second period before Buchholz medically forfeited the match. Mosier gave a solid effort against sixth-ranked Rutgers junior Scott Winston, coming up short 5-3, and Purdue junior Tommy Churchard nearly slipped past junior Anthony Volpe at 157 pounds, scoring a takedown at the buzzer only to see the call reversed by the official and have the points wiped off the board in a 4-3 loss.
Lehigh proved too much for the Old Gold and Black in the Boilermakers' third match of the day, winning eight matches in a 32-9 win for the Mountain Hawks. Fields stuck freshman Chris Dinnien in the waning seconds of the first period (2:52), while junior Jake Fleckenstein came up with the other Boilermaker win, taking an 8-3 decision from freshman James Carucci. Atwood suffered his only loss of the day at the hands of the nation's No. 1 ranked 184-pounder, 13-7, and Vukobratovich gave top-ranked and defending NCAA Champion heavyweight Zach Rey everything he could handle in an 8-3 loss that was much closer than the final score would have one believe.
The Boilermakers got into the win column with their final dual of the day, edging out American 24-22 in an exciting comeback. After sophomore Camden Eppert fell to American senior Thomas Williams at 125 pounds, 6-3, Fields answered with a 43-second pin over freshman Chris Brienza to make 6-3 Purdue. The Eagles responded with three straight bonus-point wins from No. 9 senior Matt Mariacher, junior Kevin Tao and fourth-ranked senior Ganbayar Sanjaa at 141, 149 and 157 pounds, respectively, to build a 16-6 advantage. Momentum went back to Purdue at 165 pounds as Mosier, Stein and Atwood strung consecutive wins together and then sophomore Justin Dinius accepted a forfeit win to seal the dual. Mosier earned his second win of the day in thrilling fashion, taking a 3-1 sudden victory from junior Sean McCarty, while Stein notched his third fall of the season as he pinned junior Phillip Barreiro in 2:06 and Atwood edged Thomas Barriero, 4-1.
The Boilermakers continue their dual slate next Thursday, heading up to DeKalb, Ill., to square off with Northern Illinois University. Live results will be available via the @PurdueWrestling Twitter account and TrackWrestling.com.
