Hummel scored 18 points and Anthony Johnson added 13 for the Boilermakers (2-0), who won their 19th straight home game.
Nick Barbour missed a 3-pointer in the closing seconds that could have won the game for the Panthers (1-1). Barbour scored 17 points and Shay Shine added 14 for the Big South program, which finished with a 12-19 record last season.
