IOWA CITY, Iowa - The first two rounds of singles play and all of doubles have wrapped up at the Big Ten Championships and freshman Evan Hawkins was a bright spot for the Boilermakers as he was able to advance in the singles main draw.
In singles play on Saturday, Hawkins knocked off Northwestern's Alberto Zanotti, 7-5, 6-4. In the round of 32, though, he fell to the No. 8 seed, Bruno Abdelnour, 6-3, 6-2. Hawkins will play again tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. CT against Tom Mroziewicz of Iowa.
In other singles main draw action, Pawel Poziomski lost to Jonas Dierckx of Iowa, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6. Poziomski also fell in the first round of the back draw. Thomas Kroczek fell to Alex Petrone of Michigan in the first round, 6-3, 6-2. The freshman then advanced in the back draw by way of a forfeit and will play again tomorrow Tomlins of Iowa at 8:00 a.m. CT. Billy Heuer fell to Eric Spector of Northwestern, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round. In the back draw, Heuer also fell in his first match.
In doubles on Friday, neither Boilermaker team was able to advance. In the end, the Wolverine duo of Buzzi and Franks pulled out the championship over Michigan State's top pair.
