Four Boilermakers Wrap Up Play At MSU Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Four individuals from the Purdue women's tennis team wrapped up action at the MSU Invitational on Sunday with pretty strong results.

Anna Dushkina was in the singles A draw and put together a 2-2 mark for the weekend. In the opening round, she knocked off Louisville's Brown, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals. There, she fell to Akron's Harutyunyan, 6-3, 6-3. Dushkina then was faced with Marquette's Fischer in a fifth place bracket. She defeated the Golden Eagle, 1-6, 6-1, 10-3. Next, she faced Akron's Shkundina, but fell, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6, to take home sixth place individually in the A draw.

Gisella Pere was in the singles B draw and ended the weekend with a 3-1 record. She faced Michigan State's Lingl in the first round and defeated her, 6-1, 7-6 (6). In the quarterfinals, she faced Akron's Angelina Jogasuria and put together an impressive, and composed 7-6 (6), 6-0, victory to advance to the semifinals. There, she fell to Michigan's Lee, 6-3, 6-2, which dropped her to the third place match. Pere faced Miller of Louisville and had to overcome a second set setback to take third place in the B flight with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-7 triumph.

Imogen Golder was also in the B singles draw and finished with a 3-1 slate. In the first round of the 16 player bracket, Golder topped Illinois-Chicago's Guimaraes, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2. In the second round, the Boilermaker junior fell to the B draw's eventual champion, Dodge of Michigan, 6-2, 6-4. Golder dropped to the fifth place bracket. There, she faced Michigan State's Herzog. The Boilermaker advanced past the Spartan with a default to play Akron's Jogasuria whom Pere had previously knocked off. Golder recovered from a tough second set and took the fifth place title with a 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 win.

The final Boilermaker singles player was Kay Kay Magi. In the first round of the C draw, Magi fell to Akron's Nuvakina, 6-1, 6-0, to put her in the consolation draw. There, Magi faced Louisville's Tachovsky and won, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8. In the consolation semifinals, Magi played an extremely even match with Michigan State's Hager, but eventually fell in a heartbreaker, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 1-0 (14-12).

The Purdue women also had two teams in the doubles A draw with the duo of Pere and Golder and the tandem of Magi and Dushkina. Pere and Golder won their first match in the 16 team bracket with a 9-7 win over Michigan State's Herzog and Lingl. In the quarterfinals, the pair faced Akron's Harutyunyan and Shkandina. The Boilermakers topped the Zips by an 8-4 margin. In the semifinals, Pere and Golder faced Michigan's Nguyen and Sulahian. The Wolverine duo blanked the Purdue pair, 8-0, on its way to winning the doubles A draw championship. Pere and Golder dropped to the third place match to face Jogasuria and Jogasuria of Akron, but fell, 8-6, to take home fourth.

Magi and Dushkina also won their first round match, beating Louisville's Brown and Miller, 8-6. In the quarterfinals, though, Jogasuria and Jogasuria of Akron got the better of the duo and sent the Boilermakers to the fifth place bracket with an 8-4 win. There, Magi and Dushkina faced Marquette's Fischer and Diaz, but again lost, 8-5. The tandem had one more match for the tournament in a seventh place consolation draw, but fell to Harris and Velasquez of Louisville, 8-6.

The Wildcat Invite in Lexington, Ky., and the ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles, are next for the Boilermakers. The Wildcat Invite starts on Sept. 30 and goes till Oct. 2. The ITA All-American Championships begin on Oct. 1.
